BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION: Guided by overlapping elements of environmental policy and environmental protection, the successful candidate will review development proposals and evaluate whether a project will comply with Maine’s environmental protection laws and regulations. This is professional services work involving review of environmental license applications within the Department of Environmental Protection. Responsibilities include analyzing technical and scientific information, drafting decision documents, interpreting laws, rules, regulations, and policies, defending license decisions before legal and administrative bodies, and leading project teams for complex, large, and/or controversial project proposals. Supervision may be exercised over subordinate personnel. This classification is distinguished from the lower-level classification by the increasingly complex and controversial nature of the assignments and by the project planning and management focus of the work, including team-leading/supervising. Work is performed under limited supervision.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Intermediate education, training and/or experience in environmental science or a related scientific field demonstrating a seasoned ability to analyze and process permits, applications, licenses, and technical information or demonstrated directly related experience working with environmental laws, rules, regulations, and complex technical evaluations in a scientific and/or legal field. Experience with caseload oversight is preferred.
