Environmental Services Technician - Full Time

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

To provide a safe, sanitary, orderly, and attractive environment for patients, hospital employees and visitors. Responsible for repetitive tasks in routine cleaning and special assignments in designated areas and other assigned areas. 

This is a full time position working  80 hours per two week pay period.  Work Schedule: This position works a variable schedule, Monday through Friday, consisting of four (4) 10-hour shifts each week (typically 1:00pm to 11:30pm)  The schedule also includes every fourth (4) weekend, on call every eighth (8) weekend and three (3) holidays annually.   

JOB FUNCTIONS

• Interacts with patients of all age groups (infants, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics) while performing duties.
• Uses cleaning chemicals properly, including correct dilution, dwell time, and safe handling.
• Cleans isolation rooms and follows required PPE and infection prevention procedures.
• Cleans patient’s rooms, corridors, service areas, lounges, offices and assigned areas.
• Cleans and makes up discharged or transferred patient rooms.
• Cleans rest rooms and replenishes essentials/supplies.
• Cleans stairwells, elevators and baseboards.
• Collects linen and disposes of trash to designated area.
• Performs thorough cleaning and disinfection of high-touch surfaces per department standards.
• Performs scheduled cleaning tasks, including ceiling vents, light fixtures, walls, windows, drapes, blinds, etc.
• Cleans and disinfects non-critical medical equipment, including: IV stands, pumps, beds, instrument carts, utensils, etc.
• Moves equipment and furniture for cleaning and rearrangement.
• Operates various types of cleaning equipment as required.
• Cleans work area and equipment at the end of the shift.
• Reports maintenance concerns, safety hazards, and supply needs to appropriate personnel.
• Carries and responds to assigned JRMC pager and addresses cleaning requests throughout their shift.
• Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS POSITION: (ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES TECH)

1. Preparation and Training Must be able to follow oral or written orders.
2. Work Experience - No formal experience is required; on ¬the job training is provided. Previous institutional housekeeping experience desirable.
3. Attendance - Punctual and regular attendance is an essential responsibility of each employee at JRMC. Employees are expected to report to work as scheduled, on time and prepared to start working. Employees are also expected to remain at work for their entire work schedule.
4. Analytical Ability - Ability to recognize cleaning needs, prioritize tasks, and follow procedures to ensure areas are cleaned thoroughly, safely, and on time.
5. Independent Judgment - Work is performed independently. Employees must use their judgement to plan and carry out their work in situations where methods and procedures are established.
6. Contracts with Others - Frequent contact with patients, visitors and nursing personnel.
7. Supervising the Work of Others - Usually works independently. Does not oversee work of others.
8. Responsibility for Welfare of Others - Carelessness could result in moderate harm to patients, visitors, and co-workers caused from wet floors or improper cleaning.
9. Mental / Visual Effort - Must be able to speak and write the English language in an understandable manner. Must be able to see and hear or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately to assure that the major requirements of this position can be met. Must be in good general health and demonstrate emotional stability.
10. Working Conditions - Indoor work in a controlled environment; hands are frequently in contact with water and cleaning solutions. May be requested to work shifts other than the one for which hired. Is subject to falls from wet floors or reactions from dust and disinfectants. Contact with patients under a wide variety of circumstances. Participates in and complies with the JRMC Safety Management Program. Maintains knowledge of and observes Standard Precautions. Follows infection prevention practices and approved cleaning/disinfection procedures. OSHA Job Classification: This position is defined as a Category I: Employee does have exposure to bloodborne pathogens.
11. Material and / or Equipment - Operates a variety of cleaning equipment and tools, including vacuums, carts, mops, buckets, and other approved cleaning/disinfection equipment. Probable costs would be minimal and limited to a single cost center.
12. Hazards - May be exposed to physical hazards such as slips, trips, and falls; is exposed to disease and infection when cleaning contaminated rooms.
13. Physical and Sensory Effort - Constant walking, standing, reaching, stooping, bending and kneeling when stripping and waxing floors. Must be able to constantly push floor care equipment of 50 pounds and occasionally lift supplies of 50 pounds.
14. Promotion - No formal line of promotion.
15. Background Check - A comprehensive background check will be conducted as a condition of employment for this role.
16. Drug Screen - A urine drug screening is required for all positions and must be completed within 30 days of the date of hire.
