Salary Range: $17.75 - $24.85


 


Gainesville Regional Utilities (GRU) is seeking a Facilities Technician to join our team. This is a hands-on opportunity for someone who enjoys performing maintenance and repair work and takes pride in keeping buildings and facilities safe, functional, and well maintained.

Summary

This is entry-level manual labor and semi-skilled technical work performing routine building and facility maintenance tasks in one or more fields (e.g., carpentry; electrical; heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC); plumbing, etc.), as well as performing general cleaning duties and inspecting buildings for various functionalities.


 


Positions allocated to this class report to a designated supervisor and works under general supervision.  Work in this class is distinguished from other classes by its routine building maintenance and emphasis on preventive facility maintenance activities.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS



  • Inspects buildings and other structures to determine functional systems and detect malfunctions and needed repair making notes and recommendations using a pre‐established check sheet.

  • Inspects the grounds and parking areas to be free of leaves and debris; and handles any minor clean-up and/or repairs needed.

  • Performs minor electrical maintenance to include but not be limited to replacement or repair of fixtures (e.g. wall switches and outlets, incandescent and fluorescent bulbs and tubes, ballast, sockets, fuses, minor appliances, cords, etc.) using appropriate hand, power and specialty tools.

  • Performs minor plumbing maintenance (e.g. replacement or repair of leaks in drains and faucets, unclogging of drains, trenching and laying new lines, replacing drain hoses on washers and similar devices, etc.).

  • Performs minor painting, carpentry and masonry work (e.g. preparing surfaces and using brush, sprayer, or roller to apply paints, stains, and varnishes, hanging doors, fitting locks and handles, etc.).

  • Reconfigures, installs, positions, and remounts modular offices and space (e.g. furniture, wall panels, work surfaces, storage bins, lighting, file cabinets, etc.) to accommodate user needs and maximize office space using various hand, power and specialty tools, dollies and hand trucks.

  • Sets up tables and chairs for meeting rooms as requested.

  • Prepares the surfaces and paints various structures and equipment (e.g. walls, refrigerators, evaporative coolers, floors, roofs, doors, restroom facilities, etc.) to preserve wood and metal parts from corrosion and maintain a safe, comfortable working environment using various painting equipment and related tools (e.g. sprayers, rollers, brushes, thinners, etc.).

  • Clean rooms, hallways, lobbies, lounges, rest rooms, corridors, elevators, stairways, parking lots, and other work areas.

  • Order parts and maintain required documents.

  • Maintains electronic card access system for designed building(s).

  • Attends work on a continuous and regular basis.


 


NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS



  • Will be required to respond under emergency conditions.

  • Back up support to the mail room.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential job function satisfactorily.  Below are the required education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions.


 


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE



  • Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma; and one (1) year of experience in building/facility maintenance work, including use of tools and equipment used in maintenance and repair work.


 


CERTIFICATIONS OR LICENSES



  • Valid driver license required at time of appointment.  Valid Florida Driver License required within 30 days of appointment and at all times while employed in this classification.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities


  • Some knowledge of tools used in groundskeeping, facility maintenance and construction, including concrete, asphalt drainage or row maintenance.

  • Knowledge of precautions necessary to perform work safely.

  • Ability to perform manual tasks involving physical strength and endurance under variable weather conditions.

  • Ability to work effectively with coworkers and the general public, including angry and/or abusive individuals.

  • Ability to read and understand detailed and complex work schedules and diagrams.

  • Ability to work independently with little supervision.

  • Ability to conform to grooming and dress codes (uniforms furnished).

Physical and Environmental Requirements

To perform this job successfully, an individual must possess certain physical abilities and be able to withstand work related environmental conditions.


 


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS 



  • Required to stand, walk, use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls.

  • Ability to squat, stoop, or kneel, reach above head and reach forward.

  • May on occasion be required to sit.

  • Ability to safely operate a fork truck and other motorized equipment.

  • Ability to use hand strength to grasp tools and climb ladders.

  • Ability to bend or twist the neck and trunk to perform duties

  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

  • Specific vision abilities to perform this work include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus.


 


WORK ENVIRONMENT 



  • Work may require performance of tasks in extreme heat; and entering and maneuvering within confined spaces.

  • Work may require performance of tasks outdoors under varying climatic conditions.

  • Work may require local travel to general government or GRU locations within the Gainesville area.
