Job Description - Field Mechanic - Highway Heavy Construction

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair heavy construction equipment in field environments.
  • Perform preventative maintenance services, inspections, and repairs on equipment and support vehicles.
  • Diagnose and repair diesel engines, hydraulic systems, drivetrain components, electrical systems, and undercarriage components.
  • Respond to equipment breakdowns and emergency service calls at project sites.
  • Complete equipment inspections and document repair and maintenance activities.
  • Work closely with operators, foremen, superintendents, and equipment managers to identify and resolve equipment issues.
  • Maintain service trucks, tools, parts inventory, and equipment maintenance records.
  • Perform welding, fabrication, and component replacement as needed.
  • Conduct equipment safety inspections and ensure compliance with company safety standards.
  • Assist with equipment mobilization, setup, and commissioning on new projects.
  • Maintain a high level of professionalism while working independently at remote project locations.
  • Participate in safety meetings, training, and company programs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Preferred Equipment Experience

Candidates with experience maintaining and repairing the following equipment are strongly preferred:

  • Caterpillar (Cat) Excavators, Dozers, Loaders, Motor Graders, Rollers, and Haul Trucks
  • John Deere Excavators, Dozers, Loaders, and Articulated Trucks
  • Crushers and Screening Plants
  • Paving and Asphalt Equipment
  • Skid Steers and Compact Equipment
  • Service Trucks and Support Equipment

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3–5 years of heavy construction equipment maintenance and repair experience preferred.
  • Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills.
  • Experience with Cat and John Deere equipment is highly preferred.
  • Knowledge of hydraulic, electrical, diesel engine, and powertrain systems.
  • Ability to read service manuals, schematics, and diagnostic information.
  • Valid driver's license required; CDL preferred.
  • Welding and fabrication experience is a plus.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.

Travel Requirements

  • This is primarily a remote, field-based position.
  • Extensive travel is required.
  • Must be willing to travel to multiple project locations and work away from home for extended periods as project demands require.
  • Overnight travel should be expected.
  • Flexibility to work extended hours, weekends, and emergency repair calls when necessary.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently lift and carry up to 75 pounds.
  • Ability to climb on and around heavy equipment.
  • Stand, walk, kneel, bend, crawl, and work in confined spaces.
  • Work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work for extended periods.

Safety Requirements

  • Follow all company safety policies and procedures.
  • Wear required PPE at all times.
  • Maintain a safe and organized work environment.
  • Report unsafe conditions and equipment defects immediately.
  • Participate in required safety meetings and training.
