Food Services Director
Position Summary
Hemlock Public School District is seeking a qualified and experienced Food Services Director to lead and manage all aspects of the district’s food service program. This position ensures compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations, including those established by the USDA and the Michigan Department of Education.
The Director will oversee a comprehensive nutrition program serving students from Preschool through 12th grade, ensuring high-quality, nutritious, and appealing meals that support student health and learning, while also providing high-quality catering services for district events.
A Note on Process and Transparency: The district is currently issuing a Request for Proposal for food service management, as required by state and federal guidelines. At the same time, we are posting this position to thoughtfully explore all options for our program's future. We believe in being transparent throughout this process as we determine the best path forward for our students, staff, and community.
Key Responsibilities
- Direct and manage all district food service operations across multiple school buildings and early childhood programs
- Ensure full compliance with USDA Child Nutrition Programs (National School Lunch Program, School Breakfast Program, etc.)
- Maintain adherence to all Michigan Department of Education guidelines and reporting requirements
- Develop, implement, and evaluate menus that meet federal nutrition standards and accommodate dietary needs
- Oversee food purchasing, inventory control, and vendor relationships
- Prepare and manage department budgets, financial reports, and cost controls
- Supervise, train, and evaluate food service staff
- Ensure all kitchens meet sanitation, safety, and food handling regulations
- Maintain accurate records for audits, reimbursement claims, and program compliance
- Promote student participation and wellness through innovative programming and nutrition education
- Plan, coordinate, and execute catering services for district events, including Board of Education meetings, staff functions, professional development sessions, and community events
- Ensure a high standard of quality, presentation, and timeliness for all catering services
Required Qualifications
- ServSafe Certification (current or ability to obtain upon hire)
- Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition, Food Service Management, Dietetics, or related field (preferred; equivalent experience considered)
- Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in institutional or school food service management
- Demonstrated knowledge of USDA Child Nutrition Programs and regulatory compliance
- Experience managing budgets, procurement, and staff supervision
- Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills
- Ability to manage a district-wide program serving diverse age groups (birth through grade 12)
- Ability and willingness to support catering functions outside of standard school hours
- Frequent standing, lifting, and kitchen environment exposure
- Travel between district buildings as needed
- Availability for early mornings, evenings, and occasional weekends to support district catering and events
- Ability to meet high expectations for quality, responsiveness, and service delivery
Preferred Qualifications
- School Nutrition Specialist (SNS) credential
- Registered Dietitian (RD) or equivalent credential
- Experience working within Michigan school systems
