Job Overview:
The General Laborer, reporting to the General Foreman, is responsible for a variety of general construction tasks as needed by Hampton Roads Contracting, Inc. This position involves performing manual labor and offering on-site assistance to skilled tradespeople in both commercial and industrial construction environments.
Assignments may vary based on project requirements, and employees may be called upon to perform duties and provide support across different trades to ensure overall project completion.
Description and Responsibilities:
Essential functions include but are not limited to:
Perform concrete demolition, removal, and preparation tasks.
Assist with excavation, site grading, and material placement as needed.
Assist with job site setup, cleanup, and organization.
Support building remodeling, refurbishment, and general construction tasks.
Clean and clear job sites of debris, waste, and hazardous materials, including dry dock areas.
Carry, transport, and distribute construction supplies and materials as needed.
Operate hand and power tools safely and efficiently.
Assist in job site set up.
Follow all safety protocols, job site regulations, and quality standards.
Perform other miscellaneous general construction duties as needed for project completion, including other manual labor.
Job Requirements and Qualifications:
Previous construction experience preferred.
Enthusiastic, professional, and positive attitude.
Strong work ethic.
Ability to work long hours.
Ability to pass a background check.
Valid Driver’s License and ability to operate company vehicles preferred.
Physical Requirements
Ability to stand and walk for extended periods (up to 8–12 hours per day).
Ability to perform various functional range of motion tasks.
Ability to lift/carry materials weighing up to 50 pounds frequently, and occasionally more with assistance.
Ability to push and pull materials and tools.
Ability to perform repetitive motions, including but not limited to gripping, reaching, and using hand and power tools.
Ability to work on and navigate uneven surfaces and from heights.
Ability to maintain balance and coordination in active construction environments.
Ability to work in varying environmental conditions, including but not limited to:
Extreme heat and cold
Rain, wind, and humidity
Dusty or noisy conditions
Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including but not limited to hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, steel-toed boots, and task-specific requirements.
Work Environment
Work is performed on active construction sites, typically in a shipyard environment.
Exposure to moving machinery, loud noise, and construction-related hazards.
Work may occur indoors or outdoors depending on project needs.
Exposure to heavy equipment, cranes, moving machinery, and vehicle traffic.
Work may occur at heights, over or near water, and in confined or restricted spaces.
Exposure to high noise levels, dust, fumes, and airborne particles associated with construction and marine work.
Work in varying environmental conditions, including extreme heat, cold, humidity, wind, and precipitation.
Surfaces may be uneven, slippery, or unstable (e.g., steel decks, scaffolding, gangways).
Work may require use of ladders, scaffolds, aerial lifts, and temporary structures.
