Job Description - General Manager, USA Track & Field Tour
General Manager, USA Track & Field Tour
The Organization
USA Track & Field (USATF) is the national governing body for track and field, Para Track & Field, long distance running, and race walking in the United States. USATF oversees the sport's Olympic and World Championship pathways and, in 2025, launched the USATF Tour, a new circuit created to bring structure, commercial value, and a shared identity to the country's professional track and field meets.
The Opportunity
Before the Tour existed, professional track and field meets in the United States operated independently of one another, competing for the same dates, the same athletes, and the same sponsor dollars, with no central coordination. USATF sanctions thousands of events each year across the sport, but only a small subset currently sit inside the Tour, with a goal of growing that number substantially as the Tour matures. The large majority of Tour events are conducted by independent meet promoters rather than owned and operated by USATF, which owns a small number of Tour events outright. All Tour events take place within the United States, spanning outdoor competition today with an indoor season being added and a cross-country tour under consideration.
The Tour exists to solve a specific problem for USATF's athletes. To qualify for Olympic and World Championship teams, American athletes must accumulate World Athletics ranking points, which are earned by competing and placing at sanctioned meets carrying a given label level. Without a coordinated domestic circuit, athletes have often needed to travel abroad to find enough of the right competitive opportunities. The Tour is USATF's mechanism for building that ecosystem at home, offering meet promoters sanctioning and ranking point eligibility along with support such as drug testing, officiating, medical staffing, and broadcast distribution across USATF's digital platform and its network television relationship, in exchange for meeting Tour standards.
The Tour is a proven concept that is still in its early stages, and USATF is creating this role to lead its next phase of growth. The Tour operates as a business unit within USATF’s sport performance department rather than as a standalone entity, and the General Manager will unify functions that have so far operated in silos, including sport performance, broadcast, communications, and events, into a single coordinated structure.
Position Summary
USATF is seeking an operationally strong, entrepreneurial leader to serve as General Manager of the USA Track & Field Tour. In its current phase, this role is approximately seventy percent operational: organizing the Tour, coordinating across meets, and bringing consistency and uniformity to a structure that does not yet fully exist, before it can be meaningfully commercialized. Commercial responsibility will grow as that foundation is built, but this is not a chief executive or fully autonomous leadership role. The General Manager will operate with guidance and direction from USATF leadership and will be expected to build within an established organization rather than run an independent operation.
USATF's existing Sport Performance, marketing, and broadcast teams already hold the technical, sport specific expertise needed to determine what the Tour requires; the General Manager is not expected to arrive with that expertise, but instead needs the credibility, follow through, and comfort with ambiguity to act on it with meet promoters, broadcasters, and other stakeholders, largely on the ground and in person.
Key Responsibilities
Tour Organization and Standards: Bring order, consistency, and a coordinated structure to the Tour's meets and calendar, and finalize the Tour Event Standards Guide, establishing the baseline requirements every meet must meet to remain part of the Tour.
Meet Director and Event Relations: Serve as the Tour's primary point of contact for meet directors, enforce standards consistently, and after communication with USATF’s executive team communicate difficult calls, including approval, renewal, or removal of events, to protect the Tour's integrity and quality.
Commercial Foundation: Coordinate with USATF's content and marketing teams to lay the groundwork for sponsorship, broadcast, and licensing opportunities that individual meets cannot secure on their own, growing this responsibility as the Tour's operational structure matures.
Media, Broadcast, and Content: Work with USATF's content team to raise production quality, create a consistent Tour presentation, and grow audiences across broadcast, streaming, and digital platforms.
Athlete Experience: Build, in coordination with the Sport Performance Department, athlete facing policies, participation incentives, and competitive structures that make the Tour a valuable and reliable platform for elite athletes.
Stakeholder Leadership: Represent the Tour to World Athletics, sponsors, broadcasters, agents, meet directors, and USATF's internal departments, building the credibility and relationships needed to grow its reach.
Candidate Profile
Approximately seven to ten or more years of relevant experience in professional sports, a league or tour office, sports marketing, or a comparable commercial sports environment.
A demonstrated record of building or significantly improving the operations of a sports property, league, tour, or event series, ideally at an emerging or growing organization rather than an already fully established one.
Comfort operating with real ambiguity. This role involves building a circuit that does not yet have a fully established structure, and the right candidate will be energized by that rather than frustrated by it.
The judgment and presence to have direct, sometimes difficult conversations with stakeholders who resist standardization.
Travel extensively and to work from USATF's Indianapolis or New York office; this is not a remote or hybrid position, and the travel demands are significant.
A track and field background is not required.
Preferred
Experience rising through the ranks of an emerging or growing professional league or tour, such as the G League, a developing international league, or a similar organization, rather than only established, fully built out major leagues.
Alternatively, experience in grassroots, multi promoter sanctioning environment, such as a regional motorsports, esports, golf, tennis or any other league that engages independent local operators.
Familiarity with World Athletics rules, Continental Tour requirements, or Olympic sport governance.
An entrepreneurial mindset suited to building policy, structure, and standards from a blank page rather than maintaining an established operation.
Reporting Relationships
The General Manager will work closely with USATF's Sport Performance team primarily, but will engage significantly with the Marketing, Communications and Broadcast, teams and will report to USATF’s Leadership team.
Location and Travel
The General Manager must be based at one of USATF's two offices, in Indianapolis or New York City. This is an in-office position; hybrid or remote arrangements are not available, particularly given the ground up nature of the work. USATF's new Indianapolis headquarters, a $120 million facility, is expected to open within the next couple of years.
Travel is extensive, generally in the range of 50-75%and is expected to run toward the higher end of that range in the General Manager's first year or two, when attendance at nearly every Tour event will be expected in order to build relationships with meet promoters, athletes, coaches, and training groups across the country. This travel is demanding and ongoing rather than occasional, and candidates should be genuinely comfortable with that lifestyle before moving forward.
Compensation
A base salary of $$125,000-135,000 plus a performance-based bonus.
