Reports To: Athletic Director

Seasonal Position compensated through stipend. Stipend is commensurate with the position level and applicant experience. Coaching at Heathwood is seasonal and continuation beyond a season is subject to review at the conclusion of the season.

Position Summary

The Girls Softball Program Head is responsible for leading and developing the school's softball program in a manner consistent with the school's mission, athletic philosophy, and expectations for student-athletes. The Program Head provides technical instruction, organizes and supervises practices and competitions, develops individual and team performance, and serves as a positive mentor and role model for student-athletes The Girls Softball Program Head is responsible for leading and developing the school's softball program in a manner consistent with the school's mission, athletic philosophy, and expectations for student-athletes. Success in this position includes building a positive team culture, developing student-athletes' running ability and confidence, maintaining a safe and well-organized program, supporting students' academic and personal development, and representing the school with professionalism and sportsmanship.

Essential Responsibilities

• Plan, organize, and conduct effective practices, workouts, and team activities across the preseason, regular season, and postseason.


• Teach and develop age-appropriate fundamental softball skills, including hitting, pitching, fielding, throwing, base running, strategy, and game awareness.


• Develop individual player improvement plans based on each athlete's abilities and needs.


• Establish offensive and defensive systems appropriate for the team's level of competition.


• Evaluate player performance and provide consistent, constructive feedback.


• Maintain appropriate standards for practice and competition for student-athletes.


• Establish a positive, competitive, and team-oriented culture emphasizing discipline, sportsmanship, accountability, and personal growth.


• Coordinate practice and game schedules with the Athletic Director.


• Communicate effectively with school administration, athletic department personnel, parents/guardians, student-athletes, officials, and opposing coaches.


• Maintain accurate team rosters, attendance records, eligibility information, and other required documentation.


• Assist with equipment inventory, uniforms, facilities, and field preparation.


• Ensure all equipment and facilities are used appropriately and safely.


• Submit required forms, reports, schedules, and other documentation by established deadlines.


• Participate in athletic department meetings and required professional development.


• Follow all school policies, SCISA association rules, and applicable health and safety requirements.


• Promote appropriate conduct and sportsmanship at practices and competitions.


• Collaborate with other coaches to support multi-sport athletes and the overall athletic program.


• Maintain and manage team equipment and communicate replacement or purchasing needs.


• Participate in preseason meetings, coach development, and other duties assigned by the Athletic Director.


• Complete required training timely utilizing Heathwood Hall systems and any SCISA required compliance requirements

The ideal candidate will:

• Strong organizational, communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills


• Ability to work effectively with both middle school and high school-aged student-athletes.


• Commitment to developing student-athletes both athletically and personally.


• Ability to work evenings, weekends, and travel for competitions as required.

Education and Experience

• High School Diploma/GED preferred


• Previous experience playing or coaching high school and/or college softball, preferred

Working Conditions

• Expansive school campus with 122+ acres, must be able to travel between buildings independently.


• Frequent walking, standing, stooping, and bending may be required throughout the day at various intervals


• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
