Job Description - Grocery Clerk

Description

The Belfast Community Co-op is hiring for a Grocery Clerk. The ideal candidate would be self-motivated, customer service focused, and solution oriented. Belfast Community Co-op’s mission is to bring locally sourced, reasonably priced, organic and natural products to all while fostering an environment where everyone is truly welcome. 

Starting at $16.15 hourly, this is a full time (30+ hour) position that requires weekend shifts.

Grocery Clerks balance general stocking duties with frequent internal and external customer service. A Grocery Clerk maintains a knowledge of department-specific and store-wide practices and ensures that the department is clean, and in compliance with health and safety standards. Grocery Clerks are attentive to customers and ensure that shoppers have a pleasant, friendly, efficient shopping experience.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Ensure that product is faced, rotated, stocked according to department procedures.
  • Unload and receive deliveries.
  • Stock and attractively display a well-balanced product mix, according to established department standards.
  • Ensure proper placement of signage and shelf tags. Replace and request signage or tags as needed and/or directed.
  • Repack and stock bulk items in an efficient manner following all sanitary protocols.
  • Provide consistently excellent service to internal and external customers.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment.

  • Responds promptly and honestly to customer inquiries
  • Greets customers with a smile and friendly demeanor
  • Communicates respectfully
  • Wears any required uniform (nametag, apron, chef coat, etc.) so as to be easily identifiable to customers and able to work safely (hair covering, closed toed shoes, etc.)
  • Asks for help from co-workers and provides help to customers and co-workers as needed.
  • Works efficiently and safely
  • Takes initiative and works as a part of a team
  • Approaches work with a positive attitude
  • Collaborates with others to find solutions and accepts solutions once determined
  • Continues to learn and develop knowledge as it relates to the position, co-op, and industry
  • Demonstrates regular and dependable attendance
  • Follows department procedures and SOPs

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS (knowledge, skills, and abilities)

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of the Cooperative Principles and Cooperative Business model.
  • Experience with natural foods co-ops

Minimum:

  • Ability to lift frequently, including bending and frequent stair climbing, in a variety of temperatures
  • Ability to hear and respond to intercom pages
  • Strong written and verbal communication
  • Demonstrated ability to perform quality customer service in person and over the phone
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a team and establish and maintain cooperative working relations with peers, employees, vendors, and the public.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, use hands to handle, feel, and for fine manipulation. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus. This position requires frequent interaction with the public, in person and over the telephone.
