Job Type: Full-time – 30-40 hours per week

Location: Roseville Histology Lab. Travel to Mohs sites required (Lakeville, Faribault, Hudson, Roseville)

Schedule: 7:00 AM – 5:00 PM, schedule varies based on laboratory and Mohs coverage needs. 

No weekends or holidays

Job Summary

The Grossing and Mohs Technician is responsible for playing a key role in supporting Tareen Dermatology’s growing Histology and Mohs Surgery programs. This position is responsible for the gross examination and processing of dermatologic specimens as well as the preparation of Mohs frozen sections for immediate examination during surgery. The technician utilizes specialized laboratory skills to ensure specimen handling, tissue orientation, slide preparation, and quality control while partnering closely with Mohs surgeons and laboratory professionals to deliver exceptional patient care and timely diagnostic results. This position includes work in both the Roseville Histology Laboratory and South Region Mohs locations as needed (including Faribault, Lakeville, Hudson, and Roseville). 

Job Responsibilities: 

• Coordinates and prioritizes laboratory workflow to ensure accurate and timely specimen processing, testing, and reporting.
• Reviews laboratory policies and procedures as assigned, recommends process improvements, and assists with implementation and communication of updates. 
• Participates in CLIA survey readiness, quality assurance activities, and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Utilizes quality control principles to evaluate test, instrument, and process performance and identify opportunities for improvement.
• Performs preventative maintenance, quality control, troubleshooting, and competency-related activities for laboratory equipment and instruments. 
• Maintains laboratory inventory and assists with ordering and stocking supplies.
• Uses laboratory equipment including microscopes, microtomes, cryostats, stainers, and other histology and Mohs laboratory instruments.
• Receives, verifies, accessions, and labels specimens, requisitions, cassettes, Mohs maps, and laboratory instruments.
• Performs gross examination, dissection, description, and sampling of dermatologic and Mohs specimens while maintaining specimen orientation and integrity. 
• Performs tissue embedding, microtomy, cryostat sectioning, staining, and slide preparation according to established laboratory procedures. 
• Performs tissue manipulation and orientation mapping of Mohs specimens with a high degree of accuracy to support timely diagnosis and treatment. 
• Prepares Mohs frozen sections for immediate examination and supports Mohs surgical procedures through accurate specimen processing and slide preparation.
• Accurately prepares histologic slides for microscopic examination and diagnosis by the Pathologist and/or Mohs Surgeon. 
• Identifies, prepares, cuts, stains, and preserves specimens in a manner that supports accurate diagnostic interpretation.
• Maintains competency in all pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic phases of histology and Mohs laboratory operations.
• Prepares laboratory reagents and solutions with accuracy and proper labeling.
• Maintains accurate documentation and complies with all laboratory policies, CLIA requirements, HIPAA regulations, OSHA standards, and applicable federal and state guidelines. 
• Attends departmental meetings, participates in continuing education and maintains professional competencies. 
• Travels to Mohs surgery locations as needed to provide laboratory support and coverage.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities: 

This position has no supervisory responsibilities. 

Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in a science related field required

At minimum 60 semester hours of college credits – 24 of these hours must be in science courses, which must include:

          - 6 hours in Chemistry

          - 6 hours in Biology

          - 12 additional hours in Biology, Chemistry, or Medical Laboratory Technology in any combination

Previous medical dermatology and laboratory experience preferred

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in a clinic setting.

Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Be able to lift 40 pounds.
