Description The Grossing Technologist is responsible for performing all technical aspects of receiving, dissection and dictating of non-complex surgical pathology specimen types within their assigned competency level. Expands knowledge of the disease process in order to master specimens of increasing complexity. Ensures quality, consistency, accuracy, and efficiency of specimen dissection. Performs other duties as assigned by the Lead Pathology Assistant or Manager of Pathology Services.
Job Responsibilities
Performs all technical aspects of grossing, dissection and dictating of surgical specimens using a variety of laboratory materials, chemicals and equipment, according to hospital policies and procedures; This may include specimen photography, specimen radiography and automated cassette printing system.
Receives specimens from couriers, reads manifests to verify appropriate count, maintains specimen integrity and patient identification; Travels to O.R. or certain clinics if deemed necessary to pick up specimens.
Ensures specimen integrity upon arrival and throughout the entire anatomic pathology workflow process
Maintains knowledge of the hospital Laboratory Information System (LIS), ensuring all specimens are received accurately, knowledge of printing and adding cassettes, and preparing specimens for transportation to other laboratories.
Answers telephone and identifies and troubleshoots registration, specimen and labeling problems; Elevates more serious issues to the gross room leadership.
Disposes biohazardous waste materials, maintains chemical waste storage areas in accordance with all hospital, local, state, and federal guidelines.
Maintains surgical and autopsy specimen storage area in a clean organized fashion daily.
Assists pathologists, pathologists’ assistants and histology assistant staff as requested.
Maintains grossing room for cleanliness, daily maintenance and inventory.
Maintains frozen section for cleanliness, daily maintenance, inventory and assists in frozen sections.
May perform additional duties as assigned.

Certification - None RequiredLicensure - None RequiredExperience -None RequiredEducation - Associate Degree Minimum Education: Associate's degree in a laboratory science or medical laboratory science, obtained from an accredited institution. OR Education/training equivalent to the preceding that includes at least (60) semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution. This education must include (24) semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, OR (24) semester hours of science courses that includes (6) semester hours of chemistry, (6) semester hours of biology, and (12) semester hours of chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology in any combination.· Basic knowledge of Human Anatomy and Medical Terminology· Basic (LIS) Laboratory Information System / Accessioning Skills· Must possess excellent communication skills and the ability and desire to work independently. · Must have excellent dexterity and hand-eye coordination. · Position requires extended periods of sitting or standing. · Knowledge of lab equipment and procedures· High level of attention to detail along with strong organizational skills · Knowledge of quality control and quality assurance processes
