Job Description - HCV AmeriCorps Mentor (2025 -2026 School Year)


Calling those who want to inspire and mentor young people, hone their leadership skills in a supportive environment, and join a vibrant network of residents, organizations, and community leaders who are dedicated to strengthening communities!

Homewood Children’s Village (HCV) is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of Homewood’s children while simultaneously reweaving the fabric of the community in which they live. Through collaboration, engagement, and advocacy, we offer a continuum of direct services and learning support for children and their families, from cradle to career, working diligently to address the complex challenges facing Homewood’s youth.

HCV AmeriCorps Mentors (hereafter referred to as members) contribute to this mission by serving directly in classrooms, providing small-group and one-on-one academic support in reading and math, mentoring students, and helping to redirect behaviors in alignment with school-wide expectations. Members play a key role in fostering a positive learning environment by building relationships with students, assisting teachers, and supporting school-wide initiatives and events. Through their service, members help schools improve student outcomes in academic performance, behavior, and attendance.

Site Locations:

Pittsburgh Faison K-5, Pittsburgh Lincoln PreK-5, Urban Academy, and Pittsburgh Westinghouse 6-12

Service Term: 

September 15, 2025-July 10,2026

Description of Duties:

During the program year, members will serve an average of 35 hours per week at their assigned schools, typically from 7:45 AM to 3:15 PM. *Please note that schedules may vary based on school needs or program requirements. Members will:



  • Provide small-group and one-on-one academic support in math and reading.


  • Mentor students and build positive relationships to encourage social and emotional growth.


  • Help redirect behaviors to foster a supportive and productive classroom environment.


  • Assist teachers with implementing instructional strategies and reinforcing lesson content.


  • Support school-wide initiatives and events that contribute to a positive school culture.


  • Participate in professional development training led by community leaders and subject matter experts.


  • Collaborate with school staff and fellow members to address student needs and support school goals.


Qualifications: 



  • 17 years of age (with parental permission) or older

  • U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident

  • High school diploma/GED

  • Able to pass criminal background check

  • Strong Communication Skills – The ability to engage with students, school staff, and teammates in a clear and professional manner.


  • Collaboration & Teamwork – A commitment to working closely with fellow AmeriCorps members, school staff, and community partners to achieve shared goals.


  • Initiative & Problem-Solving – The ability to take initiative, think critically, and respond constructively to challenges.


  • Basic Academic Support Skills – A foundational understanding of K-8 math and literacy skills and concepts.

Benefits



  • A pre-tax monthly living allowance of up to $2,000 (paid bi-weekly throughout the service term)    


  • A $5,176.50 SEGAL Education Award paid upon program completion    


  • Eligibility for forbearance on student loans that are federally backed, in the member’s name, and not in default    





  • All or a portion of the interest on student loans placed in forbearance that accrued during the term of service is paid by the program if the member successfully completes the term of service.





  • 24/7 access to the AmeriCorps Member Assistance Program (MAP)
