Heavy Civil Project Engineer — Underground Utilities

Location: Fairfax, VA & Nationwide projects | Travel required
Base salary: $85,000–$100,000 annually, based on experience

We are recruiting a Project Engineer for a heavy civil contractor specializing in underground utilities, water, and sewer construction. The company works nationwide on projects that typically last one to three years.

You’ll work alongside project managers and field leaders to keep projects organized, on schedule, and moving safely. The role includes time at both project sites and the corporate office. Expect to travel approximately three out of four weeks each month, including overnight stays. The company covers business travel, lodging, and per diem.

What you’ll do

  Support underground utility, water, and sewer projects from preconstruction through closeout.

  
  


• 
  

  Review drawings, specifications, permits, and contract requirements; help resolve questions before they affect field work.

  
  


• 
  

  Track schedules, costs, quantities, and project progress, and prepare accurate status reports.

  
  


• 
  

  Manage project documentation, including submittals, requests for information, meeting notes, and change records.

  
  


• 
  

  Coordinate with project managers, superintendents, crews, subcontractors, engineers, and customers.

  
  


• 
  

  Assist with subcontractor coordination, invoice review, procurement, and closeout.

  
  


• 
  

  Participate in site visits and planning meetings while supporting safe field operations.

  
  


• 
  

  Use HCSS, HeavyJob, Vista View, Bluebeam, P6, and Microsoft Project to support project delivery.

  
  

What we’re looking for

• 
  

  Experience in heavy civil construction; underground utilities, water, or sewer experience is preferred.

  
  


• 
  

  Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple project priorities.

  
  


• 
  

  Familiarity with construction drawings, schedules, cost tracking, and project documentation.

  
  


• 
  

  Clear communication skills and a willingness to learn from both field and office teams.

  
  


• 
  

  A degree in Construction Management or Engineering is preferred.

  
  


• 
  

  Proficiency with Excel, Word, and Outlook.

  
  


• 
  

  A valid driver’s license and willingness to travel nationwide on the schedule described above.

  
  

Compensation and benefits

The position offers an $85,000–$100,000 base salary, annual bonus eligibility, a vehicle and/or car allowance, and company-covered travel, lodging, and per diem.
