Job Description - Heavy Equipment Mechanic


Job Summary:

Under general supervision, the Heavy Equipment Mechanic performs repairs and maintenance on heavy equipment, light service equipment, heavy and light trucks. Typical repairs include, but are not limited to, preventative maintenance inspections, hydraulic, fuel, exhaust, brakes, suspension, electrical, HVAC, emission systems, and general mechanical systems.

Tasks:  

  • Reads and interprets equipment condition reports and/or repair orders, communicate with supervisor and/or operator for clarification of defects and discuss preventive techniques with operators to minimize future repairs.
  • Completes paperwork associated with repairing equipment, documenting parts usage and accounting for applied times (i.e., work order times compared to timecard times).
  • Determines causes of mechanical operating problems, traces and locates defects and makes repairs to heavy equipment and vehicles.
  • Uses knowledge of equipment to correctly diagnose and repair equipment.
  • Cleans the immediate work area and the general shop area.
  • Available to work weekends as needed.
  • May work in the shop or out in the field.
  • Collects oil samples & interprets reports, on-board computer, & fleet management software.
  • Performs scheduled preventive maintenance services, including lubrication & oil changes when needed.
  • Performs repairs and adjustments on all landfill vehicles.
  • Checks fluid levels, including engine oil, brake fluid, and transmission fluid to determine if additional fluids are needed; inspects a variety of vehicles and equipment following an established safety/preventive maintenance checklist to identify repairs/adjustments necessary for safe operation; fills equipment/vehicles with appropriate type of fuel (diesel/gasoline). 
  • Fuels machines when needed. 
  • Follows all safety policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned. 

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics:

  • Skill in performing general preventive maintenance services, including tire repair, wheel balancing, lubrication, oil change, and electric/electronic and hydraulic system checks on a variety of vehicles and equipment.
  • Knowledge of preventive maintenance procedures, including lubrication, oil change, and basic electric/hydraulic system checking.
  • Knowledge of vehicle/equipment safety check practices and procedures.
  • Skill in performing safety/preventive maintenance inspections on a variety of vehicles/equipment.
  • Skill in understanding manufacturer’s service specifications.
  • Knowledge of current OSHA rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of diagnostic and repair methods, techniques, materials & tools for heavy equipment.
  • Knowledge of equipment components and assemblies, installation, repair structure, functions and other essential elements of heavy equipment operation.
  • Skill in safely operating electrical/power/manual tools and equipment. 
  • Welding and/or fabrication skills and/or experience.

Requirements

Preferred Requirements

5 years of experience in a technician position requiring knowledge and application of OSHA Haz Com; OSHA Lock Out Tag Out and all OSHA Fire Protection regulations.

Minimum requirements

2 years of experience in a technician position requiring knowledge and application of OSHA Haz Com; OSHA Lock Out Tag Out and all OSHA Fire Protection regulations.

Ability to lift, stand, bend, stoop and carry objects, including but not limited to mechanical tools, materials and equipment, weighing 50 – 90 pounds and to otherwise physically perform and complete heavy equipment mechanic tasks as directed by Fleet Manager.

Qualifications:

Graduation from high school or GED equivalent and experience equivalent to two years full time assisting a journey level heavy equipment mechanic. Any equivalent combination of experience and education that will allow the applicant to satisfactorily perform the duties of the job may be considered when filling the position. Must possess a valid Arizona driver’s license, reliable transportation and a clean driving record.


Salary Description

$26.00-36.00 per hour DOE
