Job Overview
A healthcare organization in White Plains, New York, is seeking an experienced Histotechnician to join its Pathology Laboratory team.
The Histotechnician will perform a variety of manual and automated histology procedures to produce high-quality pathology slides for review by Pathologists. Responsibilities include tissue embedding and sectioning, H&E staining, special stains, immunohistochemistry, quality control, equipment maintenance, and regulatory compliance.
This role requires strong attention to detail, technical accuracy, and the ability to recognize and troubleshoot issues that could affect specimen or testing quality.
Responsibilities
Perform designated histologic procedures using manual and automated techniques
Produce high-quality pathology slides for Pathologist review
Embed and section tissue blocks according to established protocols
Process biopsy, routine, and other tissue specimens
Perform and evaluate routine Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) staining
Identify staining inconsistencies and correct issues before slides are released
Perform special stains and review results for quality and consistency
Verify and document appropriate positive controls for special stains
Perform immunohistochemistry procedures
Review positive and negative immunohistochemistry controls and document results
Escalate specimen, testing, or equipment issues to laboratory leadership and the appropriate Pathologist
Follow established pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic laboratory procedures
Maintain accurate records of laboratory testing and results
Perform and document quality control testing, calibrations, instrument verification, equipment maintenance, and preventive maintenance
Recognize testing systems that fall outside established performance specifications
Document corrective actions when testing or equipment issues occur
Evaluate test results for abnormalities and confirm results according to departmental protocols
Maintain required STAT turnaround times
Participate in proficiency testing, validations, training, and competency assessments
Support laboratory inspection and regulatory-readiness activities
Participate in quality-improvement programs and report nonconformances
Maintain inventory records, including lot numbers, expiration dates, labeling, and quality-control requirements
Complete required annual training, in-services, and continuing education
Maintain compliance with laboratory safety and chemical-handling procedures
Perform other related laboratory duties as assigned
Qualifications
Required
Current New York State Clinical Laboratory Technician license, New York State Histotechnician license, or qualifying New York State Pathologists' Assistant license
Education meeting applicable New York State Office of the Professions and CLIA requirements for laboratory testing personnel
Knowledge of histologic laboratory procedures
Ability to perform tissue embedding and sectioning
Ability to perform and evaluate H&E and special stains
Strong attention to detail and commitment to laboratory quality
Ability to follow quality-control and quality-assurance procedures
Strong organizational and documentation skills
Ability to work independently while escalating significant findings appropriately
Flexibility and adaptability in a changing laboratory environment
Preferred
Degree in Medical Technology or a related science
At least one year of relevant hospital Histology experience
ASCP certification
Immunohistochemistry experience
Experience in an acute-care hospital pathology laboratory
Regulatory & Quality Responsibilities
The Histotechnician will participate in laboratory compliance and regulatory-readiness activities involving organizations such as:
College of American Pathologists (CAP)
New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH)
Joint Commission
Other applicable laboratory regulatory agencies
The position also requires maintaining 12 continuing-education credits per year.
Work Environment
This position involves detailed laboratory work and may require prolonged periods of standing or remaining stationary. The Histotechnician regularly operates laboratory instruments, computers, and other equipment and may be exposed to chemicals commonly used in histology procedures.
