ABOUT THE ROLE
The custodian role will be responsible for basic custodian functions of Alabama School for the Blind (ASB), Alabama School for the Deaf (ASD) and Helen Keller School (HKS)
ABOUT YOU
You will play a vital role in general housekeeping maintenance including paper and soap dispenser care, reporting plumbing and lighting problems and related activities. You will be a part of the AIDB team in producing high quality work. You will be required to perform your responsibilities in a manner that sets a good example for other employees to follow and demonstrate good leadership skills. Each employee should deal pleasantly and courteously with all of the AIDB TEAM. You must be able to follow written and verbal instructions and deal with changes in work assignments. This position reports to the Principal at each school campus.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
High School Diploma or High School Equivalency Certificate.
One (1) year of increasingly responsible experience in custodial work or building and grounds maintenance.
Valid Alabama Driver’s License.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Associate's Degree from an accredited college or university.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
Facility Maintenance & Safety
General Housekeeping: Keep buildings, premises, sidewalks, driveways, and play areas neat and clean at all times.
Daily Sanitation: Clean restrooms and drinking fountains daily according to health department regulations.
Classroom Care: Clean classrooms and corridors on a daily basis.
Security: Check exit doors for proper operation daily and secure all doors, windows, and lights at designated times.
Safety Atmosphere: Maintain a safe atmosphere for students, staff, and visitors. Sufficient vision to recognize safety hazards and clean effectively.
Equipment & Technical Skills
Equipment Operation: Operate janitorial equipment such as buffers, floor sweepers, and vacuum cleaners.
Repairs: Perform simple repairs of equipment and janitorial property.
Maintenance: Manage paper and soap dispenser care and report plumbing or lighting problems.
Communication & Administration
Reporting: Report directly to the Principal at each school campus.
Independence: Ability to work independently with minimum direct supervision.
Confidentiality: Maintain a high level of confidentiality standards.
Cultural Awareness: Develop an understanding of the cultures and needs of persons with sensory loss.
Physical & Scheduling Requirements
Physical Stamina: Must be physically capable of lifting, moving, and carrying supplies weighing 30 pounds on a regular basis.
Operational Flexibility: Ability and willingness to work after hours, weekends, or holidays if necessary.
Attendance: Ability to be punctual and maintain regular attendance.
Professional Development and Certifications
Sign Language: Obtain SURVIVAL level proficiency within 12 months and SURVIVAL PLUS within 24 months (if hired at ASD or HKS).
Sensitivity Training: Attend Disability Sensitivity Training and pass the assessment with 90% or higher within the first six (6) months.
Safety Certifications: Complete and maintain CPR/First Aid training within the first 12 months.
Upon offer of employment, the applicant must submit to a fingerprint background check at an agency designated and paid by AIDB. SALARY: $15.61-$18.20 Scale C4 Rank 27
230 Days Direct deposit required.
