The Inter-Island Ferry Authority is seeking a full-time Terminal Agent to join our team in Hollis. Terminal Agents are often the first and last IFA employees our passengers interact with, making this position an important part of both our daily operations and the passenger experience.
This is more than a ticket-counter position. Terminal Agents assist passengers with reservations and travel questions, process fares and ticketing, maintain accurate sales records, support terminal operations, and work alongside vessel crews during loading and unloading. The position combines customer service, administrative accuracy, problem-solving, and hands-on operational work.
Whether helping a first-time visitor understand the ferry system, adjusting a reservation when travel plans change, balancing the day's sales, or assisting the crew on the dock, Terminal Agents help keep the IFA running safely and smoothly.
What You'll Do
As a Terminal Agent, you will:
Assist customers in person and by phone with schedules, fares, reservations, policies, and general travel questions.
Create and modify passenger and vehicle reservations and issue tickets.
Collect fares and other payments accurately and securely.
Balance assigned funds and prepare accurate daily sales reports.
Maintain the security of funds, tickets, and other accountable materials.
Help resolve customer questions and travel issues professionally and courteously.
Assist vessel crews with passenger and vehicle loading and unloading.
Perform line-handling and other operational duties when needed.
Help maintain clean, safe, and professional terminal facilities and grounds.
Follow IFA safety, security, customer service, and operating procedures.
Perform other duties necessary to support ferry and terminal operations.
What We're Looking For
A successful Terminal Agent should be comfortable working with both people and details. We're looking for someone who can remain friendly and professional while working accurately in an environment where things can get busy quickly.
The ideal candidate will have:
Strong customer service and communication skills.
Good organizational and time-management skills.
Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
Basic computer skills and the ability to learn reservation, ticketing, and internal systems.
The ability to accurately handle money and complete daily financial reconciliation.
The ability to work independently and exercise good judgment.
The ability to learn and apply IFA fares, policies, procedures, and operating requirements.
The ability to work effectively as part of both the shoreside and vessel operations teams.
The ability and willingness to work outdoors and assist with physical terminal and vessel operations in Southeast Alaska weather.
Requirements
Applicants must:
Be able to obtain and maintain a valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
Be physically capable of assisting with vessel loading and unloading, line handling, and other operational duties.
Be able to perform outdoor duties in varying weather conditions.
Be able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
Be dependable and able to work scheduled shifts with limited direct supervision.
About the Position
This is a full-time, hourly, benefits-eligible position with the Inter-Island Ferry Authority.
