Shift:  Full-Time - 36 hours per week; weekend and holiday rotation per department requirements


Job Summary:


The House Supervisor is a Registered Nurse who is responsible for the provision of quality nursing care during assigned shifts. This position serves to facilitate patient throughput throughout the entire system. They will serve as a nursing clinical resource person who provides guidance, and the interpretation and enforcement of established policies and procedures and intervenes in difficult situations or medical crisis. The House Supervisor assumes overall responsibility for adequate staffing for next shifts and, in the absence of department leadership, assumes the duties of that department until relieved of those responsibilities. 


Job Responsibilities:



  • Oversee activities and operation of nursing units during assigned shift. Conduct regular nursing rounds to assess quality of patient care, ensure patients and family needs are met and documentation that care meets established standards of nursing practice.

  • Coordinate inter- and intra-departmental activities related to delivery of patient care such as assisting in resolving patient admission and transfer problems, securing medication, supplies and equipment and obtaining needed records and reports.

  • Serve as professional resource person to nursing and other clinical personnel, and assist in administering medications and treatments, performing complex procedures or responding to emergency situations.

  • Inform on-coming supervisor and/or appropriate department head of unusually complex or sensitive situations. Provide written documentation and reports as required (i.e. Supervisors Log Book)

  • Coordinate and adjust staffing of all nursing units for the current shift and following shifts using information on patient acuity and the skill level of nursing staff to affect the desirable staffing levels.

  • Train, schedule, assign work, evaluate and when necessary, recommend discipline and discharge of subordinate personnel.

  • Investigate patient, staff or employee incidents and concerns; document findings, take necessary immediate corrective actions and assist in planning and implementing necessary procedures to avoid future occurrences.

  • Initiate counseling and/or corrective actions as appropriate in response to employee violation of policies and procedures regarding patient care, public and staff relations, work rules, etc.  Report incident to appropriate leadership team for follow-up and resolution.

  • Assist in the formulation and implementation of hospital policies for the nursing division and confer with other hospital departments to develop policies and procedures to ensure efficient delivery of nursing services.

  • Interpret and enforce hospital and departmental policies, procedures, and objectives for employees, contractors, physicians, visitors, and patients.

  • Triage and/or assess patients and determine priority of care based on physical, psychological and social needs, educational safety and discharge as well as factors influencing patient flow through the emergency care system.

  • Other duties as assigned.


Education and Experience:



  • Minimum: Associate degree from an accredited school of nursing

  • Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited school of nursing

  • Minimum: 3 years progressive related work experience


Licenses/Certifications:



  • BLS (American Heart Association)

  • ACLS (American Heart Association)

  • Registered Nurse licensed to practice in the state of Indiana
