HVAC Service Technician

Job Description - HVAC Service Technician

HVAC SERVICE TECHNICIAN
Cheshire, CT

If you're a strong diagnostic tech who takes pride in fixing the real problem and helping homeowners understand their options, this role pays you well for both. Our client is a growing, customer-first HVAC company offering $35–$50/hr plus spiffs, commission, and truck revenue bonuses, along with a take-home company vehicle and a predictable schedule. You'll start your day from home, run 3–4 service calls (no installs), and typically wrap by 4pm.

THE BASICS
Location: Cheshire, CT
Pay: $35–$45/hr, up to $50/hr for the right candidate, plus spiffs, commission, and truck revenue bonuses
Service Area: 25–30 mile radius around Cheshire, CT (roughly 15–18 towns)
Schedule: Monday–Friday (Tuesday–Saturday option available). First call dispatched from home, on-site by 8:00–8:15am, typically done around 4pm (occasionally as late as 6pm depending on the job). Weekly tech meeting Wednesdays at 7:30am.
On-Call: About 2x per month, with a stipend for being on call plus pay for each call you run
Reports To: [Owner]

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Run 3–4 residential and light commercial maintenance, demand, and service calls per day in 4-hour customer windows (8–12 or 12–4). This is a service role with no installs.
  • Work on oil, gas, heat pump, AC, and hydronic systems
  • Perform full diagnostics and fix the root issue rather than patching it, so customers aren't calling back
  • Act as a trusted advisor: walk homeowners through what you find in plain language, flag needed repairs or replacements, and recommend options that fit their home
  • Offer maintenance memberships, indoor air quality products, smart thermostats, duct cleaning, comfort add-ons, and water heater upgrades (like heat pump or tankless conversions)
  • Quote, finance, and close replacement jobs yourself, or hand qualified leads off to a Comfort Advisor
  • Work toward a monthly truck revenue target of $60K
  • Manage your calls, notes, and quotes on a company iPad in a fully cloud-based system
  • Join the weekly Wednesday morning tech meeting to stay aligned with the team

WHY HVAC TECHS LIKE WORKING HERE

  • Competitive base pay of $35–$50/hr depending on experience
  • Multiple ways to earn beyond your hourly rate:
    • 4% commission on jobs you quote, finance, and sell yourself, such as full system replacements
    • 1.5–2% truck revenue bonus when you beat your revenue target
    • Flat-fee spiff for every membership or service contract you sell
    • Spiff for turning a lead over to a Comfort Advisor who closes it
    • $75 per duct cleaning you sell, so 10 cleanings adds $750
  • Take-home company vehicle, plus a gas card that works at any station
  • Dispatched from home, so there's no morning drive to the shop before your first call
  • Steady work: the team runs over 100 service and maintenance calls a week
  • A manageable call load of 3–4 calls a day, with most days wrapping around 4pm
  • Service-only work, with no install days
  • Real schedule flexibility, such as a later start (10am–6pm) if you have personal commitments, or a Tuesday–Saturday week instead of Monday–Friday
  • On-call stipend just for being available, on top of pay for every call you run
  • Health insurance with three plan tiers, and the company covers 50% of your base-plan premium
  • Dental insurance
  • PTO that starts accruing on day one, about 10 days a year, with no waiting period
  • 7 paid holidays: New Year's Day, Good Friday, Easter, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, and Christmas
  • Company-provided iPhone and iPad, loaded with the service software you need, in a fully paperless operation
  • Company uniform shirts, sweatshirt, and hat provided
  • A team-first culture where attitude matters as much as technical skill, and the approach with customers is trusted advisor rather than pushy salesman
  • A growing company that is adding techs and expanding into plumbing and electrical, which means room to grow

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

Required:

  • 2+ years of HVAC service experience (5–7 years is the sweet spot)
  • Strong working knowledge of oil, gas, heat pumps, AC, and hydronic systems
  • Residential or light commercial background. This isn't a heavy commercial or chiller role.
  • Solid diagnostic skills and a fix-it-right-the-first-time mindset
  • Comfort recommending upgrades and add-ons during service calls in an honest, consultative way
  • A team-player attitude, which is valued just as highly as technical skill here
  • Stable work history, ideally 18 months to 2+ years at previous employers
  • Tech-savvy enough to run your day from a phone and tablet
  • Availability for on-call rotation (about 2x per month)
  • Ability to pass a drug test, background check, and driving record check
  • [CERTIFICATIONS, e.g. EPA 608, CT license]

Nice to Have (not required):

  • A proven track record of upselling or closing in a previous service role
  • Experience at a well-run, process-driven residential service company
  • Indoor air quality product knowledge
  • Water heater experience, including heat pump and tankless units
