Job Description - Inpatient Manager

The Inpatient Manager provides frontline clinical and operational leadership for Med/Surg, ICU, swing bed, and observation services under the direction of the Inpatient Director. This role supports staffing and patient flow, staff development, quality and safety, regulatory compliance, and patient-centered care while promoting teamwork and accountability.


Key Responsibilities



  • Oversee daily inpatient operations, staffing, assignments, patient flow, and resource allocation.

  • Provide visible clinical leadership through rounding, staff support, and problem resolution.

  • Support recruitment, onboarding, education, competency validation, coaching, and performance evaluations.

  • Promote safe, evidence-based, patient- and family-centered nursing care.

  • Support quality improvement, patient safety, regulatory readiness, audits, and action plans.

  • Address patient, family, provider, and staff concerns and escalate issues as appropriate.

  • Assist with scheduling, payroll review, budgeting, productivity, supplies, and cost-effective operations.

  • Facilitate staff meetings, education, committees, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

  • Assume designated leadership responsibilities in the Inpatient Director’s absence.


Qualifications



  • Current unrestricted RN license required; BSN preferred.

  • Minimum 3 years of clinical nursing experience, including inpatient or critical care experience.

  • At least 1 year of charge nurse, clinical coordination, preceptor, or nursing leadership experience preferred.

  • Current BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications; TNCC preferred.

  • Strong communication, leadership, coaching, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

  • Knowledge of rural healthcare, regulatory requirements, patient safety, and quality improvement preferred.

  • IS-100 and IS-700 required within 30 days of employment.


Professional Expectations
Maintain confidentiality, required licensure and certifications, regulatory compliance, annual education, and organizational standards. Participate in quality improvement and demonstrate professionalism, teamwork, accountability, and respect.


Physical Requirements
Position requires frequent walking and standing, patient and equipment handling, manual documentation, operation of clinical equipment, and the ability to respond safely in stressful and rapidly changing clinical situations.
