Oceaneering’s Marine Services Division (MSD) is seeking a highly skilled Inside Machinist with CNC programming, setup, and machining expertise to support the manufacturing of complex, critical submarine components in a low-volume, build-to-print environment. This role requires mastery of machining principles, precision measurement, and blueprint interpretation. Unlike high-volume “widget” machining shops, our work consists of one-off and non-repeat builds with tight tolerances, exotic alloys, and high-quality standards that directly support the U.S. Navy submarine fleet.
This role does not require travel but may require overtime.
CNC Programming & Setup
Review, edit, and optimize CNC programs (lathe and mill) using G-code and CAM platforms.
Set up, align, and secure workpieces, fixtures, and tooling on CNC and manual machines.
Conduct first-article runs and validate programs to ensure dimensional accuracy and repeatability.
Machining Operations
Perform the setup and operation of a wide range of equipment including lathes, mills, grinders, saws, and related shop machinery.
Machine complex components from materials such as HY-80, HY-100, stainless steel, Inconel, and other submarine-grade alloys.
Select the correct speeds, feeds, tooling, accessories, and cutting methods to achieve required tolerances and surface finishes.
Perform complex machining operations with minimal supervision, using both CNC and manual equipment as required.
Blueprint, Technical, and Work Document Interpretation
Read, interpret, and execute machining work using complex blueprints, drawings, manuals, GD&T callouts, and technical work documents.
Lay out workpieces, measure and mark reference points, and plan machining processes for one-off components without existing procedures, work instructions, or examples.
Precision Measurement & Documentation
Inspect, measure, and verify machined features using OD/ID micrometers, height gauges, depth gauges, calipers, verniers, dial indicators, lay-out tools, and other precision metrology equipment.
Accurately record measurements, readings, and inspection data to ensure compliance with critical tolerances.
Work closely with Engineering, Quality, and Planning to resolve machining issues and ensure successful first-time quality.
Quality, Safety, and Workmanship
Adhere to stringent submarine and Navy quality standards, including tight tolerances, high-accuracy fits, and critical surface finishes.
Follow all company, OSHA, and NAVSEA safety and cleanliness requirements.
Support continuous improvement in tooling, fixturing, machining methods, and program efficiency.
Supervisory Responsibilities
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Reporting Relationships
Reports to Production Manager.
High School Diploma/GED
Minimum five (5) years’ experience machining complex submarine, aerospace, defense, nuclear, or similarly critical components in a precision or defense manufacturing environment.
Demonstrated proficiency in programming, reviewing, or editing CNC programs (lathe and mill).
Ability to perform advanced setups, optimize tool paths, and improve setup instruction sheets.
Ability to operate both CNC and manual machine tools without supervision or guidance.
Ability to perform multi-axis machining operations (e.g., 4-axis or 5-axis mills) as applicable.
Able to read and interpret advanced blueprints, drawings, GD&T, and technical specifications without supervision or guidance.
Demonstrated working knowledge of shop math (e.g. convert between decimals and fractions, adding and subtracting decimals and fractions, basic trigonometry used for layout and measurements, etc.).
Ability to perform First Article Inspections and resolve dimensional issues to meet and exceed quality standards.
Demonstrated knowledge and proficiency in machining practices for tight-tolerance, critical components.
Demonstrated proficiency using precision measuring instruments and accurately documenting measurements.
Ability to work independently from minimal instructions and drive work through completion.
Must be a U.S. citizen who is not a dual citizen of any other country.
Desired
Experience with exotic alloys and challenging machining conditions.
Familiarity with NAVSEA or military specifications.
CAM software experience (Mastercam, SolidWorks, etc.).
Strong troubleshooting and root-cause problem-solving skills.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics:
Demonstrates high attention to detail and quality craftsmanship.
Strong communication skills with a collaborative mindset.
Ability to collaborate effectively with individuals in other departments, such as Quality or Engineering.
Adaptable and resourceful — able to plan work and think critically in a one-off production environment.
Willingness and ability to train less experienced Inside Machinists to support a culture of continued learning and growth.
Prioritizes and models safety culture and assists in reviewing cleanliness of work area.
Pay Transparency:
We offer a comprehensive and competitive benefits package. Employee benefits vary by role, however, may include Health and Wellness, Mental Health, Retirement Savings, Life and Disability, Paid Maternity and Parental Leave, Paid Time Off, Tuition Reimbursement, and an Employee Assistance Program.
