JOB DESCRIPTION 

DORDT UNIVERSITY

JOB TITLE:                    Instructional Designer  (Part-Time, Hourly)

DEPARTMENT:             Online Education

REPORTS TO:                Instructional Design Lead

 

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

The Instructional Designer serves Dordt by supporting faculty through the development of engaging and effective online learning environments and activities for online, blended, and face-to-face courses. This person effectively collaborates with faculty to build courses for on-time releases at the beginning of semesters. The Instructional Designer applies learning theory to help faculty and students achieve learning targets and create an enjoyable learning experience for students.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Work in consultation with faculty to help instructors build high-quality online/blended learning environments for undergraduate and graduate courses (including online, blended, and face-to-face courses). 

  • Apply adaptable instructional design processes such as conducting needs analyses, suggesting instructional strategies, and designing online learning environments that match the professor’s decisions regarding student learning objectives, instruction, and assessment of student learning. 

  • Provide consultation for professors, helping them be confident and successful in teaching with their course’s enhanced LMS/online site. (We currently use Canvas as our LMS.) 

  • Develop, gather, and share resources for faculty to use in the development of course materials. 

  • Provide support to faculty in the process of creating or redesigning an online course, including adapting a face-to-face course to blended/online format.  

  • Collaborate with the Director for Online Education, Dean for Online, Graduate & Partner Programs, and instructional design team to promote academic innovation, excellence, and accessibility in online/blended course design. 

  • Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

Required:

  • A clear understanding and commitment to the Reformed perspective and mission of Dordt University and ability to clearly articulate and communicate the mission effectively.

  • Ability to express an active Christian commitment, which shall include identification with a local organized church that holds to beliefs that are consistent with the mission of the university.

  • Prospective members of the Dordt University community are expected to agree with its sexuality, gender identity, and sexual conduct policy which can be found on the DU website (contact the HR Office if you need additional information).

  • Personal endorsement and understanding of the curricular design set forth in The Task and Educational Framework of Dordt University and a commitment to the goals it articulates.

  • A Master’s degree in educational technology, instructional design, or related field is required.

  • Skills in web design/development, interactive communication technologies, and basic graphic design. 

  • Experience in facilitating excellence in college pedagogy, including instructional design, online teaching strategies, and assessment of student learning. 

  • Ability to provide tech support/troubleshooting as it relates to course development, technology-enhanced instruction, and LMS features.

  • Ability to build and remediate accessible course content and resources.

  • A professing Christian committed to the Reformed perspective and mission of Dordt.

  • Mature interpersonal, collaborative, oral, and written communication skills that indicate the ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and other professionals. 

  • A working knowledge of basic HTML preferred.

  • Personal commitment to a Reformed Christian perspective and the ability to articulate that perspective well in the context of teaching and learning. 

  • Personal endorsement and understanding of the curricular design set forth in The Task and Educational Framework of Dordt University and a commitment to the goals it articulates.
