Intermediate Traffic Engineer

WSP is initiating a search for an Intermediate Traffic Engineer!

This position will be in Atlanta, GA.

This Opportunity

Provides technical assistance for the analysis, improvement, planning, engineering, design, and operation of streets and highways, their networks, adjacent land uses, and interaction with other modes of transportation and their terminals. Generates accurate and concise reports and documentation regarding construction specifications.  Assisted in performing and maintaining quality that matches industry standards for design, safety, and functionality. The chosen candidate will collaborate with transportation engineers on some of Georgia’s largest and most complex transportation projects. Technical tasks include traffic signal design, system timing for signals, ITS and signal system planning, as well as various traffic engineering services. Additional responsibilities may cover signing design and pavement marking design.  

Your Impact

• Collect, compile, and analyze data from the physical work site, surveys, blueprints, GIS data, maps, technical data, and other matrices for project development, design, and construction.   
• Support in the investigation and inspection of proposed and existing site conditions, roadways, intersections, signage, signals, pavement markings, and transportation corridors to ensure compliance with relevant regulations, standards, and construction or operational permits.
• Assist with advanced modeling techniques, concept development, design requirements, and operating strategies to account for the safety and functionality of end-users, transportation vehicles/systems, and incorporate future-ready solutions with traffic engineering design standards.
• Work as part of a cross-functional team of engineers, planners, and scientific professionals to execute project work, assist with laying out roadways, establishing reference points/elevations/grades to guide construction, calculating costs and quantities of material/equipment/labor, and ensuring project work conforms with specifications, permit applications, compliance documentation, and regulatory and technical analysis memos.
• Assist with verifying the characteristics of a site, providing technical assistance on traffic engineering studies, capacity analyses, traffic complaint investigation, traffic plan review, signal system design, monitoring and control, and operations analysis to ensure roadways are designed in a safe and efficient way and the driver is provided with all of the necessary information and safety metrics to help ensure that their driving experience is safe and efficient.
• Assist with traffic counts for roadways and intersections to determine the volume of traffic, where the traffic is going to and from, and the type of traffic on the roadway.
• Aid with second look at safety features on the road, recommending traffic safety enhancement projects based on respective studies.
• Assist in determining appropriate signage, signals, and pavement markings for new or existing roadways.

• Aid with reviewing crash data to identify roadway or intersection improvements that enhance safety for all road users.

• Assist in preparing data and visuals, including tables, charts, reports, and illustrations, to present and interpret findings, analyses, or results.

• Maintain quality control standards and procedures for accurate and precise measurements, statistical analysis, and reporting.

• Contribute to technical reports and presentations that communicate research findings and recommendations to address design or construction challenges.

• Aid in conducting engineering studies and surveys to gain further information on a particular design and construction problem or issue and/or to plan for future needs.
• Assist in the analysis, evaluation, and interpretation of data obtained during field/site investigations, offering input with developing action plans for low to mid-level risk mitigation activities.
• Assist in the preparation and implementation of site Health and Safety Plans (HASPs).  
• Work collaboratively with other engineers, planners, scientific professionals, and DOT authorities on Federal, State, regional, and locally funded road and transportation improvement and development projects.
• Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
• Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering, or closely related discipline.
• 1 to 3 years of relevant post education experience in engineering discipline and prior traffic design experience.
• Engineer in Training Certification.
• Knowledge with DOT advisory circulars and procedures.
• Knowledge of traffic engineering principles, practices, process, and design/build related to traffic control equipment, capacity and operational analysis, project management, and related communications systems.
• Ability to coordinate with agency regulators and understand requirements.
• Knowledge of relevant roadway transportation construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
• Capable interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
• Effective self-leadership with attention to detail, results orientation, and managing multiple priorities in a dynamic work environment.
• Ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instruction, work independently, and comply with company policies.
• Moderate proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, technology, math principles, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools.
• Experience with AutoCAD, MicroStation, and other applicable design software packages.
• Critical thinking and problem-solving skills require to apply technical knowledge to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, statistical analysis and arriving at the most effective, economical, and logical solution.
• Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
• Ability to work schedules is conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
• Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master’s degree in engineering. 
• Essential Professional Licensure/Certification.
