Irrigation Technician – Installation

Job Overview:

The Irrigation Install Specialist designs, installs, maintains, repairs, and schedules all irrigation system and water features on BYU campus and the Missionary Training Center. He/she works directly with contractors and site inspectors through planning, execution, and project completion. He/she works with contractors and other shops to locate utilities on site as needed and to repair systems damaged during construction. He/she also has standby responsibilities for after-hours campus emergencies March through November; and participates in snow removal. Willing to train on the job, depending on experience.

What you’ll do in this position:

• Safety, Public Relations, Vehicle Maintenance, and Inspections                         
• Design and install irrigation systems with an average 70% efficiency.
• Understand various wire sizes and voltages 24-110 volts, understand voltage draw/ resistance capacities, line loss and wire sizing charts. Understand wiring schematics to troubleshoot irrigation controller, wiring, and valve issues.
• Construction and Heavy Equipment Operation with the ability to obtain a Class B CDL for operating commercial dump trucks.
• Standby Responsibilities Year-round. Be on call to work with a team in assigned snow removal areas to clear walks, stairs, roads, plazas, crosswalks, ADA areas, parking lots, and as necessary, athletic fields.
• Fulfill snow removal duties in a safe and non-destructive manner, bearing in mind the needs and safety of the intended user

What qualifies you for this role:

Required:

• A firm commitment to the mission of BYU
• 1-2 years’ experience in irrigation install/repair
• Ability to pass post-interview physical exam
  • Physical effort: moderate, represented by frequent handling of medium weight objects (approx. 20-50 lbs.) and materials, or use of medium weight hand tools. May require climbing and working from ladders or in awkward positions
  • Environment: frequent exposure to unfavorable conditions such as all-weather, or working in cramped, very dirty, or unpleasant quarters
  • Hazards: Moderate existing or potential hazards
• Completing tasks and projects without direct supervision
• Cultivating relationships with university personnel
• Skilled project management/coordination
• Training and mentoring students/employees
• Maintain a positive attitude and demonstrate good emotional intelligence

Preferred:

• Landscape Management Degree or related bachelors degree plus 3+ years’ experience in irrigation install/repair
• Knowledge of campus and job
• Preferred Certifications (or ability to obtain shortly after hire):
  • Pump station components (pumps, filters, etc.)
  • Marking underground utilities
  • Irrigation hydraulics & components
  • Irrigation scheduling/auditing
  • Blueprints/plans for takeoffs
  • IA Certified (CID, CIT, CIC, CLIA)
  • HDPE Pipe Fusion certification
  • Leadership certification/training
  • Backflow certification
  • Qualified Water Efficient Landscaper (QWEL) or equivalent certification
  • Hydropoint University/Weathertrak Optiflow Certification
  • Class B CDL

Pay Level: 51

Typical Starting Pay: $28.25 to $36.25 per hour ($59,000 to $75,500 per year)
