Journeyman Electrician - Commercial Solar Service & Construction

POSITION SUMMARY:

SOLON is seeking an experienced Journeyman Electrician to support the operation, maintenance, repair, and construction of commercial solar photovoltaic (PV) systems.

This position will primarily support our Service and Operations & Maintenance (O&M) Team, performing site inspections, electrical troubleshooting, testing, repairs, equipment replacements, and system upgrades at existing commercial solar facilities. The position will also support our Construction Team with the installation and commissioning of new commercial solar projects as needed.

The ideal candidate has strong commercial electrical experience, a working knowledge of solar PV systems, and the ability to safely troubleshoot electrical and communications equipment in the field. This is a hands-on position that requires independent problem-solving, attention to detail, and a strong commitment to electrical and workplace safety.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Perform inspections of operating commercial solar PV systems and document findings through inspection and service reports.
• Troubleshoot, diagnose, repair, replace, and upgrade PV system components, including modules, inverters, conductors, electrical distribution equipment, meters, monitoring equipment, and communications systems.
• Perform electrical testing and diagnostics using appropriate test equipment, including digital multimeters, insulation resistance testers (megohmmeters), clamp meters, and other electrical testing devices.
• Inspect  electrical systems, equipment, and components to identify defects, hazards, equipment failures, and potential code or installation deficiencies.
• Install, assemble, modify, maintain, and test electrical wiring, equipment, raceways, and related components using appropriate hand and power tools.
• Pull, route, terminate, and test conductors and cables serving circuit breakers, disconnects, transformers, inverters, switchgear, combiner equipment, and other electrical components.
• Install grounding and bonding conductors and associated electrical equipment.
• Read and interpret electrical drawings, single-line diagrams, schematics, equipment manuals, specifications, and construction documents.
• Verify installations for conformance with project documents, applicable electrical codes, manufacturer requirements, and company standards.
• Plan and perform electrical installations based on project drawings, specifications, field conditions, and applicable codes.
• Assist with installation, testing, startup, and commissioning activities for new commercial solar PV projects.
• Identify electrical and system performance issues and communicate recommended corrective actions to project managers, service managers, customers, and other project personnel as appropriate.
• Complete required service documentation, inspection reports, photographs, test records, and other project documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
• Maintain tools, testing equipment, company vehicles, and assigned materials in safe working conditions.
• Follow company safety policies, OSHA requirements, applicable electrical safety practices, and site-specific safety procedures.
• Perform other duties reasonably related to the position as assigned.
• Hiring Salary Range: $25.00-$32.00 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications.
  

Education and Experience

• At least 5 years of commercial or industrial electrical construction experience  (commercial solar experience preferred). 
• At least 1 year of electrical service, troubleshooting, or maintenance experience involving solar PV or battery energy storage systems. 
• Experience with and ability to safely use electrical and solar-specific testing and diagnostics equipment, including digital multimeters and clamp meters, insulation resistance testers (megohmmeters), thermal imaging cameras, and curve tracers.
• Experience with Lockout/Tagout procedures, DC electrical troubleshooting and diagnostics, and Torque verification.
• Ability to read and interpret electrical plans, specifications, single-line diagrams, and equipment documentation.
• Strong working knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC) as it applies to commercial electrical and solar PV installations.
• Working knowledge of OSHA requirements and electrical/construction safety practices.
• Ability to work independently in the field and effectively communicate and document findings, corrective actions, and technical issues.
• Strong troubleshooting, organizational, and documentation skills.
• Valid driver’s license with clean driving record and background check.

• Ability to perform electrical installation, inspection, troubleshooting, and repair work in active construction and operating commercial environments.
• Ability to lift, carry, position, and move tools, equipment, and materials weighing up to approximately 50 pounds.
• Ability to regularly stand, walk, climb, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and perform other physical activities associated with commercial electrical work.
• Ability to safely work from ladders, lifts, rooftops, elevated work areas, and other locations commonly encountered on commercial solar projects.
• Ability to work in outdoor environments and varying weather conditions, including periods of high heat or cold.
• Ability and willingness to travel to project and service locations, including overnight and out-of-state travel (up to 50%).
• Availability for occasional extended assignments and weekend work based on project or service requirements.

WORKING CONDITIONS

This position involves field work at active commercial solar facilities and construction sites. Work is primarily performed outdoors and may involve exposure to heat, cold, dust, noise, energized electrical equipment, construction activities, and other conditions typical of commercial electrical and solar installations.

The typical work schedule is during weekday business and construction hours; however, occasional early-morning, evening, weekend, or emergency service work may be required based on customer and project needs.

Travel and overnight stays may be required, primarily throughout the Southwestern United States.
