Job Description - K9 Handler

Description

The primary responsibility of the Security Officer - K9 is to maintain the safety and security of patrons, employees, and the property of Horseshoe Baltimore. Security Officers - K9 utilize a specially trained and certified detection canine to perform job-specific security functions, including detection, deterrence, patrol operations, and response activities throughout the property.

This position serves as both a Security Officer and the assigned K9 Handler. The handler is responsible for the care, well-being, training, transportation, and housing of the canine partner both on and off duty. The role requires a significant commitment to maintaining the readiness, health, and operational effectiveness of the assigned canine.



Responsibilities
  • Enforce safety policies and procedures to maintain a safe environment for guests and team members.
  • Patrol the property, respond to calls for service, and gather information related to security and safety incidents.
  • Respond to situations requiring K9 support throughout the casino, parking facilities, and surrounding property.
  • Perform crowd management and scene control during incidents and special events.
  • Provide basic medical assistance in accordance with departmental training.
  • Conduct identification checks to ensure compliance with state laws and company policies.
  • Monitor, control, and restrict access to designated areas.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively through radios, telephones, and written reports.
  • Maintain knowledge of applicable gaming, state, and local laws.
  • Collaborate with Security leadership, Security Officers, and departmental representatives to implement security protocols and procedures.
  • Operate company vehicles and other motorized equipment as required.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

K9 Handler Responsibilities

  • Train, handle, and care for the assigned canine in accordance with company policy and established training standards.
  • Ensure the canine receives proper daily care, including feeding, watering, exercise, grooming, medication, and veterinary care as needed.
  • Maintain cleanliness and sanitation standards in all K9-related areas, including proper waste management.
  • Monitor and report any canine health, behavioral, or performance concerns.
  • Participate in ongoing training exercises and detection scenarios to maintain canine certification and operational readiness.
  • Maintain the canine's safety, well-being, and ethical treatment at all times.
  • House the assigned canine at the handler's residence and provide an environment that supports the canine's health, enrichment, and quality of life.
  • Safely transport the canine between the property, residence, veterinary facilities, training locations, and other approved destinations.


Qualifications
  • Starting pay rate: $28.00 per hour. 
  • The assigned handler will receive one (1) hour of overtime pay per day, seven (7) days per week, for all days the canine remains in the handler's care.
  • Employment in this position is contingent upon successful completion of the required K9 Handler Course and any additional training or certifications designated by Horseshoe Baltimore. 
  • The handler must maintain a reliable personal vehicle capable of safely transporting the canine using a company-provided crash-proof crate., per company current policy.
  • The handler must maintain a residence where a canine of the assigned size and breed is permitted and can be housed safely and humanely. 
  • Must complete the assigned K9 handler training course successfully.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Law enforcement, military, security, or related experience preferred.
  • Gaming industry experience preferred.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid Maryland Gaming License.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and successfully pass a motor vehicle records check.
  • Must successfully pass all required background screenings and drug testing.
  • CPR certification required; certification may be obtained after hire.
  • Alcohol Awareness certification required.
  • Must successfully complete annual training and certification requirements related to the position.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook.
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and professional in stressful, high-pressure situations.
  • Ability to effectively handle guest concerns, security incidents, and operational issues.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding patrons, employees, and company operations.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and maintain professionalism during emergencies.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to engage in physically demanding activities when necessary.
  • Ability to sit, kneel, bend, lift, and move throughout shifts as required.
  • Vision sufficient to perform all duties during daytime and nighttime operations.
  • Flexibility to work varying schedules, shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime as business needs require.
