Lab Technician - Oncology (not certified)

The Oncology Lab Technician works under the supervision of the Practice Manager and Oncology Lead to accurately perform specimen analysis on waived and moderate complexity laboratory tests, instrument maintenance, quality control procedures including waived, and troubleshooting issues while giving excellent customer service to patients, visitors, caregivers of other departments, and each other.

• Assures pre-authorization and completes appropriate consent forms (ABN) prior to collection of limited coverage tests.
• Reporting, and maintaining records of patient results. Processes incoming orders for lab testing including reference laboratory specimens, Clinical Trial specimens, and specialty kits for genetic and molecular testing. Sends specimens to reference laboratories for any testing not performed in house.
• Performs specimen analysis of all Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology and Urine specimens. This includes both CLIA classified Waived and Moderately complex laboratory tests.
• Maintains and operates all laboratory equipment. Performs daily, weekly, monthly, and periodic instrument maintenance as indicated
• Adheres to the Laboratory’s quality control policies and documents all QC activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and instrument maintenance. Records proper lot numbers of all controls, calibrators, and reagents
• Follows the laboratory policies whenever tests systems are not within the laboratory’s established acceptable levels of performance. Identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and wither corrects the problem or notifies the Oncology Lead
• Maintains proper documentation as described by the quality assurance program. Verifies all alert and critical results in which the results are documented in a timely manner. Participates in proficiency testing by performing sample analysis and reporting results at least once a year.
• Processes in-coming results from the reference laboratories and scans results into the EMR in a timely manner
• Maintains adequate inventory of supplies and ensures that all supplies are viable before use in patient testing. Prepares reagents and other chemical solutions as needed. Restocks the laboratory as needed
• Adheres to all OSHA and The Joint Commission standards. Properly disposes of hazardous materials and maintains a clean working environment
• Answers telephones, directs calls, gives phone reports, fax reports as needed and provides excellent customer service
• Assists the Oncology Lab Lead with Quality Assurance Projects and serves as resource when the Oncology Lab Lead is unavailable. Other Duties as assigned.

• H.S. Diploma - or GED - Required

• Eight-week in-house orientation and training period since no experience is necessary. - Required
• 1 Year - Previous lab experience and/or completion of college level science courses. - Preferred

• Must be able to travel between various system facilities and off-site locations as needed. - Required
