Laboratory Technologist-Histotechnologist

Perform a variety of complex medical laboratory tests in all areas of the laboratory assigned (hematology, immunohematology, immunology, coagulation, bacteriology, microscopy, routine chemistry, therapeutic drug monitoring) for the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease and illness.

• Performs phlebotomies, including capillary punctures and venipunctures, and collects blood samples as appropriate for the patient and procedure.


• Processes specimens utilizing established protocols and technical knowledge.


• Conducts chemical analysis of body fluids (e.g., blood, urine, spinal fluid) and other biological materials to determine the presence of normal or abnormal components, chemical content, or reactions.


• Cultivates, isolates, and identifies microbial organisms, and performs various tests on these microorganisms.


• Analyzes laboratory findings and test results to ensure accuracy.


• Calibrates, standardizes, and maintains laboratory instruments following established procedures, including performing quality control, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting to ensure proper functioning of instruments, reagents, and procedures.


• Validates and reports test results, delivering patient reports according to policy and collection manual timelines.


• Provides technical information about test results to physicians and other medical personnel.


• Assesses personnel competency, conducts training, and evaluates testing personnel annually; trains and mentors lab assistants, medical laboratory technicians, and students engaged in laboratory testing.


• Responsible for collecting, investigating and reviewing Quality Management Data

  In addition to duties in assigned areas of the clinical laboratory, the Lab Technologist–Histotechnologist prepares tissue specimens for microscopic examination and performs the following functions:

  
  
  
  
  • Receives, verifies, and accessions tissue specimens according to established procedures.
  
  
  • Performs tissue fixation, processing, embedding, microtomy, and slide preparation.
  
  
  • Performs routine hematoxylin and eosin staining, special stains, and immunohistochemistry procedures when trained, competent, and assigned.
  
  
  • Assesses slide quality and initiates corrective action when results do not meet established acceptance criteria.
  
  
  • Maintains histology equipment, reagents, supplies, inventories, and work areas.
  
  
  • Performs and documents histology quality control and quality assurance activities.
  
  
  • Maintains accurate specimen identification, traceability, and documentation throughout tissue processing and slide preparation.
  
  
  • Maintains policies and procedures
  
  
  • Resolves technical problems
  
  
  • Assists the pathologist/dermatologist with specimen preparation and other histology-related activities as assigned.
  
  
  • Supports compliance with applicable CAP, CLIA, OSHA, HIPAA, hospital, and laboratory requirements.
  
  
  
  

Shift: Rotational schedule with other staff. May be required to work any day of the week including holidays and weekends, or other shifts.

Requirements:

• Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or a closely-related field.


• ASCP certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist.


• 3 years experience in a Medical Laboratory Technologist role in secondary/tertiary hospital lab settings.


• Demonstrated knowledge of clinical microscopy, clinical chemistry, hematology, blood banking, immunology and serology, and microbiology.


• Histotechnologist certification through ASCP or eligibility to obtain certification.


• At least one year of histology laboratory experience.
