Lead Maintenance Mechanic

Superior Weighting Products is seeking a Lead Maintenance Mechanic in Pecos, TX. The Lead Maintenance Mechanic, reports to the Plant Manager and is responsible for leading, cleaning, maintaining, fabricating, rebuilding, and repairing SWP plant equipment with the goal of ensuring minimal plant downtime. The Maintenance Mechanic will also be required to assist plant production personnel and management with other production-related activities as needed.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Performs scheduled lubrication, maintenance, and clean-up (as directed) for all plant equipment.
2. Repairs all plant equipment within the scope of his/her skill level.
3. Welds and fabricates chutes, hoppers, piping, equipment supports, and other plant equipment and machinery.
4. Assists plant production personnel, when and as requested by Company management.
5. Timely performs mill rebuilds to reduce mill downtime.
6. Maintains and updates required maintenance records for plant equipment.
7. Reviews, tracks, and immediately reports to plant management any/all issues with plant equipment that could impact production processes, output, deadlines, workplace safety, and/or product quality.
8. Responsible for housekeeping of the tool storage area, the shop area, any work area after the overhaul or repair of equipment or any fabrication projects, lube/oil storage area, diesel tank area, air compressor area, front drive area, and performs break-room clean up, when and as requested.
9. Maintains, troubleshoots and tests plant equipment, machinery and components.
10. Identifies replacement parts for plant equipment and researches and makes recommendations for procurement, when and as needed.
11. Loads bulk or flatbed trucks, when and as needed.
12. Performs all duties safely in accordance with Company procedures and applicable safety requirements.
13. Supports and participates in the Company’s Quality Management System.
14. Performs all other duties as assigned by the Operations Manager or other Company management.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. High School Diploma or GED; Technical Degree in mechanical repair or other relevant field is a plus.
2. At least five (5) years of prior relevant maintenance-related work experience; prior work experience involving mill maintenance would be highly advantageous.
3. Prior experience working in an MHSA-regulated environment is a plus.
4. Crane operator certification and work experience is essential.
5. Prior welding work experience is required.
6. Forklift operation certification and work experience is essential.
7. Valid driver’s license and the maintenance of a driving record satisfactory to the Company.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

1. Thorough knowledge of mechanical power transmissions, crushers, conveyor belts, Raymond mills, front end loaders, forklifts, bagging machines and basic fabrication concepts.  
2. Ability to operate, maintain, rebuild, and troubleshoot plant equipment used by the Company and to utilize power and manual tools required for the position.
3. Knowledge of mechanical equipment design and general maintenance techniques.
4. Superior trouble-shooting and problem-solving skills.
5. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate with a wide variety of audiences.
6. Highly self-motivated and directed.
7. Willingness and aptitude to learn unfamiliar mechanical equipment, tools, and machinery and to stay informed of new technologies.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

None. However, the Maintenance Mechanic should expect to be called upon to lead, mentor, and train others and to participate in work team assignments.

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

1. Will work in a plant and warehouse environment with regular exposure to heat, humidity, inclement weather, excessive noise, electrical hazards and hazardous materials, including products, chemicals, components, and tools used in the repair and maintenance of plant equipment, and work in confined spaces, when and as needed.
2. On call availability 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to proactively respond to the Company’s operational needs; must be available by cell phone when scheduled to be on call.
3. Willingness and ability to work additional hours during the week and/or weekend, including 10-12 hour shifts.
4. Overtime is regularly required.
5. Will be required to drive to run errands and to procure and retrieve necessary parts, equipment, and supplies for the plant and Company management, when and as requested.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

1. Able to continuously use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. 
2. Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, squat, stoop, kneel, lean, bend, and crouch. 
3. Able to regularly climb (including stairs, ladders, and other apparatus) and work at extreme heights. 
4. Able to regularly lift, carry, push, pull, and/or move up to 100 pounds, and occasionally lift, carry, push, pull, and/or move up to 400 pounds (the latter with the assistance of a forklift, hoist, crane and/or other appropriate lifting support mechanisms).
5. Able to use close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and adjustment of focus. 
6. Required to regularly talk, hear, and listen in the process of communicating with Company management, warehouse personnel, and other third parties.
7. Must comply with all safety and PPE requirements.
8. Must have dexterity of hands and fingers to operate required power and manual tools, machinery, vehicles, forklifts, cranes, and all other Company plant and mechanical equipment.
9. Must be physically capable of performing all work responsibilities in the environment described above.
