Library - Operations Supervisor - Palmdale

The Library Operations Supervisor supports the day-to-day operations of Palmdale City Library. This position supervises staff, helps maintain consistent service and efficient workflows, and works with library leadership to identify and address operational needs. The supervisor promotes excellent patron service, staff development, clear communication, and a welcoming environment for the community.

This position reports to the Library Director.

• Hours per Week: 40 hours
• Employment Status: Full-Time
• FLSA Status: Non-Exempt (Hourly)

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES 

An individual must be able to perform each essential duty and responsibility satisfactorily.

• Supervise assigned staff, including scheduling, coaching, training, and providing feedback on performance.
• Monitor daily library operations and help ensure appropriate staffing, service coverage, and completion of assigned work.
• Support the hiring, onboarding, and training of new employees in partnership with library leadership and Human Resources.
• Identify staff training needs and help deliver training on library procedures, customer service, technology, and safety practices.
• Communicate expectations and operational updates clearly and model professionalism, teamwork, and compliance with library policies. 
• Help develop, maintain, and implement library procedures and consistent, efficient workflows.
• Address patron concerns and support staff in resolving service issues.
• Collect operational statistics and prepare reports as requested.
• Work with library leadership, vendors, LS&S departments, and other partners to resolve operational issues.
• Support emergency preparedness, incident response, and a safe environment for staff and patrons.
• Stay informed about community needs and recommend improvements to library services.
• Keep the Library Director informed of emerging concerns, recommend solutions, and follow through on assigned actions. 
• Follow all legal and policy requirements related to patron privacy and custodianship of patron records. 
• Perform other duties as assigned.

An individual should possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below and meet the education, training, and/or work experience requirements of the position. 

• A Bachelor’s degree is required. 
• An ALA-accredited MLS or MLIS degree or current enrollment in a library master’s degree program is desirable.
• Experience in customer service, administrative operations, or a comparable setting involving detailed procedures and direct interaction with the public. Experience in a library or public service setting preferred.
• Prior supervisory experience strongly preferred. Demonstrated leadership through leading projects or serving as a lead employee will be considered. Experience training and coaching staff strongly preferred.
• Strong organizational, problem-solving, and written and verbal communication skills.
• Attention to detail and the ability to maintain accurate schedules, records, and transactions.
• Ability to use library and office software, including a high degree of proficiency in MS Office tools (Outlook, Excel, Word, and OneDrive)
• Ability to work independently, collaborate with others, and communicate effectively with people from diverse backgrounds.
• Ability to handle confidential patron and personnel information.
• Bilingual English/Spanish skills preferred.
• Regular and reliable attendance is required.
• Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed to meet library operational needs.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Ability to sit or stand for extended periods and perform work using a computer.
• Ability to occasionally lift, push, pull, or carry items weighing up to 25 pounds, such as books, files, and other library materials.
