Job Description - Licensed Mechanic Plumber

Plant Engineering Licensed Plumber works to ensure a safe, comfortable, and attractive health care environment, reflecting an attitude of help and service on behalf of the plant engineering department.

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Diploma in relevant vocational training or successfully completed apprenticeship as a plumber
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License and be insurable
  • Must possess a state recognized license for a journeyman plumber or equivalent of competence in the appropriate trade classification for the work to be performed is required of all individuals performing plumbing and fixture repair (if from a different state obtain New Mexico recognized license within twelve (12) months of hire)
  • Minimum of four (4) years’ experience related to building maintenance or construction
  • Proven experience as a licensed plumber in an industrial and/or commercial plumbing systems
  • Basic computer keyboarding experience, Microsoft Word and Excel skills, and ability to utilize a PC or tablet
  • Demonstrate ability to use electrical and hand tools (e.g., wire strippers, voltmeter, etc.) and electrical drawings and blueprints
  • The ability to use electrical meters to check voltage and amp readings for connected loads
  • Possess a thorough knowledge of safety procedures and legal regulations and guidelines
  • Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving ability
  • Proven initiative (recognizing and doing what needs to be done before being asked to do it)
  • Good human relations skills coupled with the ability to work with hospital staff and people from outside the organization
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Able to keep accurate and legible records
  • Demonstrated project coordination success
  • Must be willing and able to learn and share knowledge with others
  • Must be dependable, trustworthy, enthusiastic, polite, and thorough
  • Knowledge and ability to inspire others in the performance of their duties

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in the healthcare industry
  • Additional mechanical, HVAC, plumbing and electrical training in formal Technical/Vocational training: plumbing, steam plant, chiller plant operations, cooling towers, HVAC systems, controls, etc.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Carries out regular maintenance of plumbing systems at commercial and residential sites
  • Inspects previously installed plumbing systems at commercial and residential sites
  • Performs any necessary repairs to previously installed systems
  • Keeps up to date with current safety regulations and requirements for the various plumbing systems a company installs and maintains
  • Works carefully to follow all current regulations for plumbing work to ensure that all installed systems pass inspections
  • Keeps detailed reports of work done
  • Helps mechanics evaluate minor plumbing problems and inspect repairs completed
  • Estimates the time and materials to perform plumbing system repairs correct any unsafe work conditions and report any unsafe conditions to management.
  • Reviews, develops, and archives maintenance repair operational procedures on plumbing equipment
  • Regularly reviews critical equipment records to ensure asset conditions updates and repairs planning
  • Performs lockout tagout procedures
  • Performs confined space entry and self-rescue work as required
  • Attends and leads training and safety sessions as assigned
  • Provides technical assistance and train staff in job specific site work procedures
  • Designs equipment installation and modification and determines supplies and materials required
  • Uses electrical meters to check voltage and amp readings for connected loads
  • Assists the department manager/assistant manager or supervisor with project coordination, procurement, inventory assistance, gathering information, reporting, and running errands when requested
  • Inspects equipment, facilities, and work completed for proper operation and working condition
  • Maintains an organized work area and clean up periodically as tasks progress and upon completion
  • Maintains routine records and determine type and extent of malfunctioning equipment
  • Adjusts, disassembles, repair/replaces parts/components, reassembles, and tests for proper operation
  • Reports more serious problems to supervisor or management for instructions and/or maintenance scheduling
  • Tends to gas-fired steam boilers, hot water boilers, and heaters
  • Makes necessary adjustments to ensure proper steam pressure, combustion, water flow, water level, operation of safety devices, and auxiliary equipment
  • Tests boiler water, condensate from various designated sources, and make necessary chemical changes/adjustments based on test results
  • Services and make repairs to heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment including fans, motors, coils, thermostats, dampers, and regulating controls
  • Cleans and lubricates fan coil units, motors, and other machinery
  • Replaces filters, belts, hoses, and fluids as necessary and maintain adequate records of such repairs
  • Maintains, repairs, and make alterations to steam, water, pneumatic, and sanitary plumbing pipelines, fixtures, and components
  • Performs general welding, cutting, and joining of metals not requiring critical test tolerance or certification
  • Conducts general mechanical maintenance duties such as monitoring, troubleshooting, adjusting, and repairing various building assemblies
  • Maintains lighting fixtures (e.g., bulbs and ballasts)
  • Cleans sink and grease traps, replace, and repack valves, and assemble equipment and other related items
  • Makes minor repairs on hospital beds, television sets, and other patient related items that pertain to the Plant Engineering Department
  • Moves supplies, furniture, and equipment
  • Properly disposes of trash and scrap materials
  • Learns and abides by other applicable SJRMC/department policies and procedures
  • Learns and applies proper procedures and respond accordingly when working with, disarming/re-arming, and diagnosing the messages and trouble lights for the fire alarm system
  • Learns proper start-up, testing, running, and shut down procedures along with preventive and general maintenance on the fire pump and emergency generator, such as oil changes, battery checks/changes, proper gauge readings, etc.
  • Maintains required competencies: HIPAA; safety; infection control; HealthStream on-line courses; and various other necessary education (e.g., attend in-service training sessions)
  • Exercises proper safety practices before and throughout the execution of all duties
  • Stays alert to unsafe conditions and items needing Plant Engineering attention
  • Corrects the situation or reports it to the Plant Engineering Manager
  • Follows up by recording corrective action on the Daily Log Sheet or verify that a work order was issued
  • Reports and follow up to ensure needed equipment, materials, and supplies get ordered
  • Completes documentation on status of work for tasks requiring more than one (1) day
  • Completes records to accurately and thoroughly document all work performed
  • Keeps a neat personal appearance
  • Maintains commitment to the concept of continuous improvement in all aspects of job duties
  • Each employee is responsible for implementing SJRMC’s Service Standards into their daily work.

Physical Demands and Environmental Work Conditions:

  • May be required to wear personal protective equipment
  • Must be able to concentrate, pay attention, yet remain alert to surrounding dangers
  • May be required to work in sterile and mechanical areas (with moving machinery, noise, and heat)
  • Normal eyesight, hearing, and manual dexterity with both hands are necessary for safety purposes
  • Typical work includes a lot of walking, standing, stooping, climbing, crawling, pushing, pulling, twisting, and lifting up to fifty (50) pounds
