Life Lab Farm Manager

Gateway School, in beautiful Santa Cruz, CA, is a CAIS-accredited, independent K-8 day school of approximately 140 students. Summary of Life Lab Farm Manager Role:

The objective of the Farm Manager is to support the dynamic Gateway School Life Lab Garden and the Life Lab science program through general garden maintenance and upkeep. The Farm manager works closely with and under the direction of the Life Lab Teacher.  This position averages 15 hours per week year-round. Weekly hours change as the seasonal needs of the garden change; for example, increased hours during events, planting season, or heat waves, and fewer hours throughout the winter season.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Provide general maintenance of the Life Lab garden and surrounding areas Plant, weed, water, fertilize, fall/winter pruning, organic and integrated pest management control methods


• Install, repair, and monitor irrigation systems including valves, timers, and drip systems


• Organize supplies and tools in the shed, classroom, and throughout the Life Lab garden


• Support events as needed 


• Build, turn, and maintain compost and vermiculture


• Manage Life Lab green waste, trash, and recycling


• Install and remove seasonal planting supports and structures


• Occasionally assist during class times if needed for safety 


• Attend occasional team meetings, supervisor check-ins, and trainings


• Other duties as assigned by the Life Lab teacher or C.O.O.

Qualifications: 

• 2+ years of experience in the fields of organic gardening, orchard care, agroecology, and/or permaculture


• Knowledge and hands-on experience with irrigation systems and repair


• Ability to perform the physical aspects of the job, including but not limited to working outdoors for prolonged periods, lifting, bending, digging, and complete various physical tasks as assigned.


• Flexible schedule

• Passion and experience working in an educational environment


• Completion of UCSC Agroecology Apprenticeship Program or equivalent

Salary and benefits. 

Hours: Average of 18-20 hours a week (the weekly schedule is generally 3-4 shifts of approximately 4 - 6 hours during the school day). 

Start Date: Rolling basis

Pay: $22 -$24/hour, depending on qualifications

Benefits: This position is not eligible for benefits
