The North Carolina Department of Justice, led by the Attorney General of North Carolina, represents the state, state agencies, and elected officials, and defends the rights of the people of North Carolina. The Department handles all state criminal appeals cases and assists district attorneys with complex criminal cases at their request. Additionally, the Department of Justice includes the North Carolina State Crime Lab, the North Carolina Justice Academy, and the Sheriffs’ and Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Divisions.

The Maintenance/Construction Technician III is responsible for ensuring that all facilities at the North Carolina Justice Academy are maintained in a high state of readiness. This role performs skilled work across multiple trades—including plumbing, mechanical, and structural systems—while supporting preventative maintenance, repairs, and campus improvement initiatives. The position also plays a key role in maintaining safety, functionality, and security across campus buildings and infrastructure.

Some travel, including some occasional overnight stays are required
The selected candidate is subject to a background investigation.

The North Carolina Justice Academy (with campuses in Edneyville and Salemburg) provides basic, intermediate, and advanced training for law enforcement officers on topics including anti-terrorism, community-oriented policing, criminal investigation, traffic crash investigation, firearms, self-defense, and management and supervision. Additionally, the Academy provides basic, intermediate, and advanced training for Detention Officers and Telecommunicators on behalf of the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Education and Training Standards Commission.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

  • Experience with plumbing, mechanical systems, and/or general construction practices.
  • Experience diagnosing and/or repairing a wide range of facility-related issues.

Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two (2) years of progressive experience in the assigned trade areas; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualification: May require current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations Part 82, Subpart F.
