JOB SUMMARY:
Under the general supervision of the Airport Maintenance Director and Airport Maintenance Foreman, the Airport Maintenance Technician IV performs a broad range of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance and repair work for airport assets in both landside and airside areas. Responsibilities include maintaining airport grounds, buildings, infrastructure, and systems such as electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and airport operational equipment. Duties also include mowing, equipment repair, building maintenance, and operational support to ensure compliance with all applicable Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR) Part 139 requirements.
This position requires strong knowledge of airport operations, a proactive approach to maintenance, and the ability to work collaboratively to maintain a safe, secure, functional, and compliant airport environment. The Airport Maintenance Technician IV is expected to perform duties with minimal supervision and assist in mentoring lower-level maintenance personnel when necessary.
Essential Job Duties:
1. Perform skilled maintenance, installations, and repairs in building construction and mechanical trades including plumbing, painting, carpentry, electrical, masonry, metal work, roofing, flooring, HVAC, and welding.
2. Conduct repairs and maintenance on commercial electrical systems including, but not limited to, airfield lighting systems, security gates, fencing, terminal equipment, and passenger boarding bridges (jet bridges).
3. Conduct repairs and maintenance to airport surfaces including, but not limited to, concrete and asphalt pavement repairs, striping, crack sealing, and surface preservation.
4. Apply finishes to surfaces such as wood, metal, glass, plaster, concrete, and asphalt, and apply non-restricted pesticides/herbicides in compliance with health and safety regulations.
5. Safely operate and maintain hand tools and heavy equipment including backhoes, tractors, mowers, drills, saws, generators, dump trucks, manlifts, loaders, and other specialized airport maintenance equipment.
6. Assist with properly lifting, stacking, transporting, and moving heavy equipment and materials while ensuring work sites and shop areas remain safe, clean, and organized.
7. Read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, schematics, maintenance manuals, and written or verbal instructions to perform tasks with precision and accuracy.
8. Monitor and assist with contracted airport maintenance and construction projects using as-built construction drawings, project specifications, and maintenance manuals.
9. Respond to routine maintenance requests, on-call service requests, emergency situations, and operational issues while providing regular updates to supervisors, directors, and other airport stakeholders including ARFF, airlines, tenants, TSA, and FAA personnel.
10. Maintain inventory of tools, equipment, and supplies while ensuring accountability, safety, security, and proper reporting of damaged or missing items.
11. Perform effective and accurate radio communications with Air Traffic Control (ATC/Tower) and adhere to all airport driving and ground control procedures.
12. Conduct routine inspections of airport facilities, lighting systems, fencing, pavement conditions, and operational areas to identify deficiencies and corrective actions.
13. Assist in maintaining compliance with FAA Part 139, TSA Part 1542, OSHA, environmental, and airport safety regulations.
14. Ensure compliance with health, safety, and building codes while demonstrating regular and reliable attendance, including availability for various shifts, weekends, holidays, overtime, compensatory time, and emergency callback response as necessary.
15. Perform other duties as assigned.
Other Job Functions:
1. Conduct routine maintenance and minor repairs on equipment including tractors, mowers, edgers, weed eaters, chainsaws, and landscaping equipment while ensuring proper operation, maintenance, and storage procedures.
2. Perform maintenance tasks involving lifting, carrying, and moving objects up to 75 pounds while following proper lifting techniques and safety precautions.
3. Assist with airport emergency response operations during weather events, incidents, fuel spills, wildlife hazards, and other operational emergencies.
4. Communicate effectively with personnel, tenants, contractors, and regulatory agencies to exchange information and address operational concerns.
5. Perform tasks independently or as part of a team while promoting a positive and productive work environment.
6. Assist with training and mentoring lower-level maintenance personnel on airport procedures, equipment operation, and safety practices.
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:
1. Strong knowledge of facilities maintenance, commercial electrical systems, airfield lighting systems, utilities, equipment repair, heavy equipment operation and maintenance, HVAC systems, and FAR Part 139 Airport Regulations and Part 1542 Security Standards.
2. Proficient in reading and interpreting blueprints, as-built construction drawings, diagrams, schematics, and technical specifications.
3. Skilled in operating and maintaining various motorized equipment, tools, and heavy machinery with strong mechanical aptitude and dexterity.
4. Ability to perform accurate measurements, arithmetic calculations, troubleshoot maintenance issues, and complete assigned work efficiently.
5. Effective oral and written communication skills with strong interpersonal abilities to foster productive working relationships. (Bilingual Proficiency Preferred)
6. Competence in using computers for training, technical, and communication applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, email systems, and basic computer security practices.
7. Knowledge of proper lifting techniques, shop mechanics, equipment safety, and landscaping practices.
8. Physical ability to perform tasks such as bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, standing, walking, climbing ladders, and working from elevated heights.
9. Commitment to maintaining a safe, clean, secure, and organized work environment.
10. Strong ability to work independently or as part of a team while promoting a positive and encouraging workplace culture.
11. Demonstrates excellent self-motivation, problem-solving skills, adaptability, leadership potential, and efficient task management with minimal supervision.
Minimum Education, Certification, and Experience Requirements:
1. Education:
• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Technical or trade school education in electrical, HVAC, plumbing, construction, industrial maintenance, or related field (preferred).
2. Experience:
• Minimum of three (3) years of experience in commercial or industrial building maintenance required.
• Prior airport or aviation maintenance experience preferred.
• Experience in electrical systems, HVAC systems, plumbing repairs, pavement maintenance, and maintenance of tractors, mowers, and other power equipment (preferred).
• Experience operating heavy equipment and working within regulated operational environments (preferred).
3. Certifications and Licenses:
• Valid driver’s license required; Texas driver’s license required within 90 days of hire.
• Secure Identification Display Area (SIDA) badge must be obtained and maintained throughout employment.
• Completion of Airport Driver Training within two (2) months of hire.
• Preference for certifications in electrical, plumbing, HVAC, welding, equipment operation, or related maintenance fields.
4. Background Check:
• Must successfully pass a 10-year fingerprint-based criminal history background check.
• No disqualifying felony or misdemeanor convictions within the past 10 years, as applicable to airport security requirements.
5. Physical Requirements:
• Ability to lift and/or move up to 75 pounds occasionally and 50 pounds frequently.
• Frequent walking, standing, bending, reaching, climbing stairs, and ladder use.
• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and perform physically demanding tasks in an active airport environment.
6. Work Environment:
• Work is performed in indoor and outdoor environments, including construction zones, mechanical areas, and active airfield operations.
• Exposure to aircraft operations, moving equipment, hazardous materials, noise, and varying weather conditions.
• Position is designated as essential personnel and is subject to emergency callback for operational needs, severe weather events, and airport emergencies, including irregular work hours.
• Required to comply with all airport safety procedures and use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
