The Manager of Outdoor Adventures & Travel / Camp Director will:
- Design, plan and implement summer camp, outdoor adventure, and travel programs.
- Oversee GSNorCal’s Adventure Program Portfolio, included but not limited to: scheduling and managing high ropes, archery, swimming, etc
- Oversee GSNorCal’s Travel Portfolio, including but not limited to: Destinations, troop travel, council travel programs
- Direct Camp Skylark Ranch independently, including:
- Pre-season staffing and training
- In-season program management
- Staff coaching
- Camper and parent interactions
- Day-to-day operations
- Develop and manage the seasonal program and adventure calendar, including communicating with volunteers and camp staff.
- Collaborate with staff, volunteers and community partners to deliver adventure and travel programs designed for personal growth, enhanced relationships and environmental appreciation.

Daily, weekly and monthly activities include:
Event Management
- Design and deliver fun and intentional youth programming matching the ability and interests of participants
- Develop and manage GSNorCal summer camp programs and year-round outdoor program events and initiatives:
- Program development and implementation
- Collaborate with key staff members
- Monitor and track program budgets
- Oversee program development and implementation
- Recruit, train and supervise part-time and seasonal staff/volunteers
- Deliver Adventure Programming
- Ensure that participants and staff are familiar with and follow safety procedures as required by state, federal and Girl Scouts guidelines
- Ensure that participants are dressed appropriately and given proper safety training prior to the use of any specialized equipment
- Attend and support travel program meetings and events.
- Provide coaching and modeling for staff for the promotion of and progression of activities matching participants’ abilities and interests
- Maintain appropriate certifications (lifeguard, ropes course training, etc.) where required
- Manage and care for the physical facilities and equipment to ensure safety and cleanliness; Document and report any maintenance or repair issues in a timely manner
- Provide superior customer service to both internal and external customers (youth, parents/families, staff, volunteers, and vendors); Follow-up and initiate resolution for any concerns or issues
Strategic Development and Collaboration
- Document, track and maintain a program and training hour portfolio
- Participate in quarterly event planning and management
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop revenue-generating programs for internal and external initiatives
- Collaborate with Community-based program staff to develop outdoor programs and camping opportunities in under-served communities
- Review existing program curriculum; Ensure content meets organizational standards and effectively incorporates contemporary issues, skills progression and leadership development
Facility Management and Training
- Assist in the planning and facilitation of staff enrichment training
- Manage and care for physical facilities and equipment to ensure safety and cleanliness; Document and report any maintenance or repair issues in a timely manner; Ensure security of site and equipment when not in use
- Review and maintain appropriate documentation for specialty equipment
Communication
- Publish event offerings on GSNorCal’s registration sites
- Exhibit strong presentation and facilitation skills (in-person and virtual)
- Assist in the evaluation and reporting process effectively conveying program metrics
Essential Qualifications:
- Be current or willing to obtain required certifications and licenses:
- ACCT Level 2 Ropes Certification
- Archery Instructor
- Bachelor’s degree or two years related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Experience in hiring, training and supporting adults and youth in community-based programs
- A minimum of two years experience in leading and coaching youth program instructors and/or counselors
- Strong goal-setting, project planning, budget management and organizational skills
- Ability to relate to and understand the developmental needs of youth K-12
- Able to manage and support staff to manage multiple projects, multi-task and prioritize in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment
- Proficient in cloud-based applications such as Microsoft Office (including Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint, or Google Suite (Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, etc.)
- Be knowledgeable and able to implement standard and local operating procedures and Girl Scouts guidelines
- Become a registered member of the Girl Scouts organization
- Experience working with children in direct volunteering, volunteer support and/or customer experience role
- Experience in observing, member, camper, volunteer and/or staff behavior, assessing its appropriateness, enforcing appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and applying appropriate management techniques to address situations effectively
- Able to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid
- Strong communication skills
- Able to work a flexible schedule including pre-scheduled evenings and weekends
- Able to work a consistent schedule from home with reliable, high-speed internet connection
- Able to attend pre-scheduled in-person activities and/or meetings across the assigned territory
- Valid California Driver’s license, access to reliable transportation, proof of insurance
- Able to pass Girl Scouts of Northern California’s background screening process (including fingerprinting, criminal education, social security and Department of Motor Vehicle verification)

- Basic camp craft skills: knots, orienteering, etc
- Experience managing, coordinating or executing complex projects
- Bilingual in Spanish, or other language, and English
- A proven track record in working with diverse communities
- Knowledge of Girl Scouts mission and programs
- Knowledge of California State and American Camp Association laws and standards
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 lbs (boxes, materials, equipment)
- Visual, auditory and physical ability to identify and respond to hazards; Must be able to assist youth in emergency settings
- Possess physical endurance including prolonged standing, bending, stooping and stretching
- Capable of working at heights, in rustic situations, in various weather conditions and wildlife (bugs, snakes, bats, raccoons, etc.)
- Able to live on-site at a designated campground for up to 4 months
