Job Description - Marine - Mate of Towing

Job Title: Mate Of Towing-Near Coastal


SOC code: 53-5021


FLSA Classification: Non-Exempt


Department/Location: Alaskan Waters


Reports to: Captain


Status: Full Time, Seasonal

Schedule:


12 hour days Sunday through Saturday. 7 days a week for up to 8 weeks at a time.  Work is on a seasonal basis.



Summary:


Supervises and coordinates the activities of the crew aboard the towing vessel as directed by the Captain, and stands watch in the Captain’s absence.



Essential Functions:



  • Adhere to the QSEMS (Quality, Safety, and Environmental Management System) including the Quality Assurance Manual (QAM) and the Operating Procedures Manual (OPM).

  • Supervise and coordinate activities of crew aboard towing vessel.

  • Examine gear and life-saving equipment.

  • Order crew to repair or replace defective gear and equipment.

  • Stand watch during specified periods.


Other Tasks:



  • Performing other related duties, as assigned. 


Supervisory Responsibilities:



  • Stands watch during specified periods and determines geographical position of vessel upon request of vessel captain.

  • Directs activities of workers engaged in vessel operations.

  • Assumes command of vessel in event the captain becomes incapacitated



Qualifications:


To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function and preferably can also perform other tasks satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. Education and/or Experience:


Minimum: 



  • Merchant Mariner Credential

  • Mate of Towing Near Coastal

  • Radar Observer Unlimited

  • TWIC

  • Valid Driver License


Preferred:



  • Vessel Security Officer (VSO) Certificate 

  • First Aid/CPR

  • Alaska Tug and Barge experience preferred, including Western Alaska rivers and Arctic regions.


 


Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:



  • Understanding of industry standards for Towing vessels

  • Ability to make and break tows (push mode or tow wire)

  • Understanding of safe navigation practices while under tow.

  • Knowledge of principles and methods for transportation of goods.

  • Knowledge of and ability to use Internet software and the ability to use Microsoft Office and email.

  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair and maintenance.

  • Skill in controlling operations of equipment and systems on the vessel.

  • Skill in problem solving and reacting quickly with rapidly changing situations.

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization. 

  • Ability to speak English over radio and over phone.

  • Ability to read and understand simple instructions, short correspondence and memos

  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

  • Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s.

Working Conditions:


Environmental Conditions & Inherent Hazards:



  • Weather Exposure: Work may involve exposure to inclement weather, including rain, snow, ice, and arctic temperatures is rare.

  • Heat: Occasional exposure to hot diesel engines and hoses during equipment lubrication.

  • Noise: Moderate to high noise levels from equipment and operations.

  • Vibration: Occasional exposure to normal equipment vibration.

  • Atmospheric Conditions: Possible exposure to diesel fumes, dust, and other airborne particles.


Hazards:



  • Moving Mechanical Parts: Exposure to engine components, drive trains/tracks, and other mechanical parts.

  • Electrical: Potential exposure to electric shock from generator sets and other site equipment.

  • Work at Heights: Occasionally exposed to situations which require fall protection.

  • Radiant Energy: Active Radar, rarely exposed.

  • Fuel & Chemicals: Exposure to diesel fuel, petroleum distillates, and related hazards.

  • General Construction Hazards: Must remain aware of potential risks associated with heavy equipment and construction environments.
