Mechanic

Job Overview:

• Under general supervision, performs maintenance and repair of City vehicles, equipment, machinery, and small engines to help ensure equipment remains safe and operational.

Specific Tasks, Duties, & Responsibilities

• Inspect, diagnose, service, and repair City vehicles, equipment, machinery, and small engines.


• Perform preventive maintenance, including oil changes, tune-ups, filter replacement, tire rotations, and other routine services.


• Mount, dismount, repair, and balance tires used on City vehicles and equipment.


• Troubleshoot mechanical problems and complete necessary repairs.


• Inspect and test vehicles and equipment to identify maintenance or safety concerns.


• Identify replacement parts and supplies needed for repairs and coordinate or place orders as necessary.


• Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a safe and orderly condition.


• Assist other technicians with maintenance and repair activities as needed.


• Complete maintenance records and other required documentation.


• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Worker Requirements

Education & Experience

• High school diploma or GED.


• Valid driver's license.


• Experience performing automotive, equipment, or small engine maintenance and repair preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Knowledge of basic automotive and equipment maintenance and repair practices.


• Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and determine appropriate repairs.


• Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, and other shop equipment.


• Ability to perform tire mounting, balancing, and related tire services.


• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.


• Ability to work independently and cooperatively with other technicians.


• Ability to follow established safety procedures.


• Ability to safely operate and test City vehicles and equipment associated with assigned maintenance and repair duties.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions

• Ability to perform moderate to heavy physical activity, including standing, bending, kneeling, reaching, lifting, pushing, and pulling.


• Ability to work around vehicles, machinery, moving parts, automotive fluids, noise, and other shop-related hazards while using required protective equipment.


• Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather and environmental conditions.

Hours/Scheduling

• Typical work schedule is Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.


• Overtime or schedule adjustments may be required based on operational needs.
