Job Summary

The Fleet Mechanic is responsible for performing preventative maintenance and mechanical repair work related to specialized fire/EMS vehicles and heavy fire apparatus for Elk Creek Fire Protection District and Conifer Protection District. We are looking for a technical individual who has the motivation to learn and gain additional certifications.

Significant training will be provided including support towards ASE certifications and Emergency Vehicle Technician certifications. This role works closely and under the supervision of the Fleet Manager and is a part-time position and no other benefits will be offered.

Elk Creek Fire Protection District and Conifer Fire Protection District cover the communities of Aspen Park, Conifer, Pine Junction, and portions of Morrison and Littleton, in Colorado. The combined annual call volume is 1,900 calls per year in an area of mixed residential, commercial and recreational properties, consisting of approximately 60% EMS and 40% fire. Both districts have a focus on wildland fire due to the wildland-urban interface risk. The districts provide ambulance (both ALS and BLS) response and transport.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

• Performs vehicle, apparatus, small gas, diesel, and electrical equipment repair.


• Schedules and performs maintenance, repair and annual testing, including operating hand and power tools with specialty instruments as required.


• Performs annual testing, maintenance and repair work in the following areas: hydraulic and air brakes; ABS; gas and diesel engines; advanced electrical (AC and DC), and on-board computers; fuel delivery; hydraulics; transmissions; air systems; exhaust, axles and suspensions; fire pumps; foam systems and aerial apparatus.


• Keeps daily electronic log of time, materials and labor for recordkeeping and billing purposes.


• Maintains detailed records on entire fleet to include all maintenance and repair records, costs of service, costs per mile, accident records, and safety checklists in an automated system.


• Assists with annual testing programs for pumps, aerial ladder equipment and vehicle emissions for departmental fleet. Assists with performing and maintaining records of NFPA fire equipment tests and apparatus testing.


• Some building maintenance responsibilities will be required.

• Other duties as assigned. 

Minimum Qualifications

• 1-2 years of verifiable experience as a mechanic or education in auto or diesel repair.


• Must be at least 18 years of age.


• High school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED).


• Must possess a valid driver’s license.


• Must be able to pass a criminal background investigation.


• Must be able to pass a drug and alcohol screen.


• Minimum of 70 lbs. lifting ability.


• Must have the legal right to work in the United States.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior automotive, diesel, or heavy equipment maintenance experience.


• Trade school or technical education coursework.


• ASE certifications.


• Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) coursework or certifications.


• Welding or fabrication experience.


• Experience working with fire apparatus or emergency vehicles.


• Wildland fire or emergency services experience.

Appropriate personal protective equipment shall be utilized as required.

Certifications and Requirements

Required Within Established Timeframes:

• CPR/First Aid

Compensation and Benefits

Compensation and benefits shall be established in accordance with District policy, budget approval, and applicable compensation schedules.
