Job Description - Mechanical Engineer

Mechanical Engineer

Location: East Falmouth, MA | On-Site

Work Authorization: U.S. Citizenship

Clearance: Must be eligible to obtain a Secret or Top Secret/SCI security clearance

Employment Type: Full-time, salaried, with full benefits

The Company & Mission:

Our client is a mission-driven defense technology company building advanced AI/ML-enabled maritime systems for national security applications. The organization develops integrated software, sensor platforms, and operational tools that support real-world deployment across maritime and submerged environments.

The team operates with a highly collaborative, engineering-first culture where hardware, software, and mission operators work closely together to rapidly prototype, test, and deploy systems into operational environments. Engineers are expected to take ownership, move quickly, and stay closely connected to real-world mission requirements.

This is an opportunity to work on next-generation unmanned maritime sensing systems that directly support national security missions.

What This Role is All About:

Our client is seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer with maritime experience to join a cross-functional team designing, building, testing, and deploying unmanned maritime sensor systems.

This role is highly hands-on and spans the full product lifecycle — from concept development and CAD design through prototyping, field testing, manufacturing handoff, and operational deployment. The position will work closely with electrical, embedded, software, and field operations teams to deliver ruggedized systems capable of operating in challenging maritime and submerged environments.

You will be the second and senior of the two mechanical engineers on the team and will be expected to mentor junior engineers and technicians while helping establish scalable engineering and manufacturing practices as the organization grows.

This position involves regular lab work, prototype fabrication, troubleshooting, and frequent on-water operational testing.

What You'll Be Doing:

  • Lead structural and functional design of mechanical systems using both engineering analysis and practical design intuition

  • Design systems for operational maritime and submerged use with a focus on reliability, durability, maintainability, and operator usability

  • Produce and maintain mechanical CAD artifacts including drawings, documentation, assemblies, and revision control

  • Select and optimize manufacturing processes while creating clear build documentation for technicians and external suppliers

  • Design components optimized for additive manufacturing and develop appropriate testing regimens for printed parts

  • Build, test, troubleshoot, and refine prototype hardware systems in both lab and field environments

  • Support limited production builds and manufacturing scale-up efforts

  • Develop documentation, procedures, and manufacturing artifacts to transition systems to technicians and production workflows

  • Participate directly in operational testing, including bench testing, field deployments, and at-sea trials

  • Gather and incorporate feedback from assembly technicians and field operators to improve system reliability, manufacturability, and operational effectiveness

  • Collaborate closely with interdisciplinary engineering teams across hardware, software, embedded systems, and operations

  • Mentor junior engineers and technicians as the hardware team expands

What You Bring:

  • Must be willing and eligible to obtain a Secret or Top Secret/SCI security clearance

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Naval Architecture with 5+ years of relevant experience, or 10+ years of highly relevant experience including at least 5 years in a design-focused role

  • Prior maritime design experience

  • Strong familiarity with standard mechanical engineering tools, workflows, and documentation practices

  • SolidWorks experience preferred, though candidates with strong experience in comparable CAD platforms who can transition quickly will also be considered

  • Extensive hands-on experience with prototyping, testing, troubleshooting, and iterative hardware refinement

  • Experience working in lab and field testing environments

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills within collaborative engineering organizations

  • Ability to physically participate in at-sea deployment, testing, and recovery operations, including lifting, carrying, maneuvering on small boats, and performing fine mechanical tasks

Bonus Points:

  • Experience with small boat operations and maritime field deployments

  • Experience with unmanned or autonomous systems (UxS)

  • Experience designing ruggedized or deployable hardware systems

  • Familiarity with additive manufacturing workflows and rapid prototyping environments

  • Prior experience in defense, maritime, or national security environments

Benefits:

  • Equity participation

  • 401(k) retirement plan

  • Unlimited paid time off (PTO)

  • Paid parental leave

  • Paid holidays

  • Comprehensive medical, dental, vision, and life insurance

  • Short- and long-term disability coverage
