What you can expect to work on…
The Mechanical Engineering Team Lead combines hands-on engineering with the opportunity to help others succeed. You will design, troubleshoot, test, and improve equipment and facility systems while helping coordinate technical work across Engineering, Fabrication, Quality, Operations, Maintenance, and other teams. From early concepts through fabrication, commissioning, and hand-off, you will help turn requirements into practical, reliable solutions while strengthening the processes and technical judgment that support the team.
- Leads and contributes to mechanical design, troubleshooting, testing, and system integration across small- to medium-sized projects.
- Partners across Engineering, Fabrication, Quality, Operations, Maintenance, customers, and suppliers to resolve issues and move work forward.
- Helps coordinate priorities, track commitments, and surface risks or blockers in partnership with the Mechanical Engineering Supervisor.
- Mentors and supports team members through coaching, peer review, onboarding, and knowledge sharing while reinforcing strong engineering practices and documentation.
What you need to succeed…
- Bachelor degree in mechanical engineering field or related engineering discipline
- 8+ years of progressive mechanical engineering experience with the following:
- equipment or product design, mechanical drawings, prototype development and testing, manufacturing, integration, or commissioning
- solving complex mechanical problems and successfully leading multiple small- to medium-sized projects
- coordinating cross-functional teams and working directly with internal customers, external customers, suppliers, and subject-matter experts
- technical design reviews, engineering release and change-control processes, requirements, specifications, and controlled technical documentation
- manufacturing practices and quality-system processes in a regulated or high-reliability environment
- 2+ years’ experience of progressive technical leadership and mentoring team members

- Appreciates the current state of systems and processes and exercises sound judgment in proposing and implementing improvements

Great to have…
- Master’s degree in mechanical engineering
- 10+ years’ progressive mechanical engineering experience
- Hands-on experience using lean manufacturing and continuous-improvement methods such as Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing, 5S, or KPI-based problem solving
- 3+ years of experience with QMS processes in regulated industries such as Aerospace/Defense, Medical, Pharmaceutical, or Nuclear
- Experience with facility and utility systems such as HVAC, cooling-water systems, chillers, boilers, building maintenance, or building automation
- Experience in cGMP manufacturing, an NRC-regulated facility, or a research and development environment
- 3+ years’ experience of progressive technical leadership and mentoring team members
- Formal training/application of Project Management
Other things to know…
- Full-time position
- The company’s standard operating hours are Monday thru Friday 6:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. with production related activities requiring 24/7/365 shifts
- This position will have regular working hours Monday - Friday within the standard operating hours
- There is an expectation of adjusting working hours outside the standard hours to meet operational requirements
- Niowave has multiple locations within the Lansing area and travel between locations is expected in the role
