Job Description - Medical Assistant Float- Primary Care
Under the general supervision of the Nurse Manager, the Medical Assistant provides assistance to the patients and providers to manage the flow of the clinic. The Medical Assistant (MA) works as part of the care team to support physicians, nurse practitioners, and other clinicians in delivering high-quality patient care. The MA performs both clinical and administrative duties, ensuring smooth patient flow, accurate documentation, and a positive patient experience.
Clinical Duties
Greet patients, verify demographics, and prepare them for visits.
Measure and record vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, temperature, weight, height, BMI, oxygen saturation).
Assist providers with procedures (suturing, splinting, wound care, abscess drainage, orthopedic immobilization, etc.).
Review and document patient history, current medications, and allergies.
Perform basic clinical tasks such as EKGs, vision/hearing screenings, wound care, immunizations ( CMEs/Registered MA) , and specimen collection (urine, blood, swabs).
Administer injections and vaccines per provider orders and clinic protocols.
Follow infection control and safety procedures (PPE, room cleaning, sterilization of instruments).
Provide patient education on health maintenance, medications, and follow-up instructions.
Administrative Duties
Schedule patient appointments, referrals, and diagnostic tests.
Manage and document patient messages, prescription refill requests, and provider communications.
Update electronic health records (EHR) accurately and promptly.
Handle prior authorizations and insurance verifications as needed.
Support population health initiatives and Care Gaps (outreach calls, chronic disease management, preventive screenings).
Coordinate with labs, imaging centers, pharmacies, and specialists.
Maintain patients privacy and secure patient privacy information
Will need to float to other sites and cross cover as needed
Will attend and complete agency trainings as assigned
Performs other job related duties as required or assigned
Key Responsibilities
Work is of medium demand, walking and standing.
Occasional lifting of patients with assistance, reaching, handling and fingering of instruments and equipment and caring of patient needs.
Demonstrate understanding and commitment of the health center mission
Demonstrate understanding and commitment to the established CHC Values and Standards
Performs other job related duties as required or assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma or GED required, Associate Degree in Medical Office Assistant or equivalent preferred
Previous experience preferred
Bilingual in Spanish/English or Portuguese/English Preferred
Work experience similar to a medical office environment
Computer skills for accurate data entry
Knowledge of basic medical terminology
AHA BLS Health Care Provider certification or equivalent
Demonstrated interpersonal relationship skills
Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills in English
Demonstrated ability to work in a fast paced medical office environment
Competencies: Individual departments will develop competencies which will be communicated and maintained through CHC’s performance evaluation system.
Supervision Exercised: None
Environmental Working Conditions: Usual working environment found in outpatient primary care office setting. Exposure to blood products, body fluids, cleaning solutions, and medications.
Physical and Mental Requirements: The physical and mental demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential duties of this job with or without a reasonable accommodation. Normal visual acuity and standard clerical dexterity to operate computers, printers, photocopiers, and fax machines; moderate walking, standing, reaching, and stooping in order to accomplish everyday office tasks required.
