Medical Laboratory Technician (Medical Laboratory Technician 1) – Oregon State Hospital, Salem

Note: Effective Feb. 1, 2026, the compensation plan for this position will be increased to reflect a Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) of 2.5%. The salary listed in this posting does not reflect the COLA.

The Medical Laboratory Technician performs the duties that support medical laboratory operations at the Oregon State Hospital (OSH).  Duties include clerical and administrative functions as well as technical functions relating primarily to phlebotomy, specimen processing, quality assurance, point of care, waived, and non-waived testing at the Oregon State Hospital.

What We Are Looking For

Minimum Qualifications: These qualifications must be visible in your application for consideration.

  • High school diploma or equivalent; AND

  • One year of "technical trainee" experience as a laboratory assistant in a clinical laboratory; OR

  • Completion of a certified clinical laboratory training program; OR

  • A certificate or associate degree in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical laboratory technology or nursing from an accredited institution.

Desired Attributes: The following list includes attributes that are key to being successful in this role at OHA. If you possess any of these attributes, please include your experience in your application materials.

  • Experience working with potentially challenging patients in a mental health facility.

  • Knowledge of medical terminology.

  • Experience processing clinical specimens which include centrifugation, aliquoting, pre-test specimen organization, and performing waived testing.

  • Experience following instructions for reference lab specimen collection and processing.

  • Experience working with proper specimen identification following the National Patient Safety Goals.

  • Experience entering, proofing, and correcting data accurately.

  • Experience providing outstanding customer service to diverse populations.

Special Qualifications:

Minimum of one year of phlebotomy experience required.

Preference Statement:

Preference will be given to applicants with prior clinical laboratory experience.
