Job Description - Medical Malpractice Underwriter

Position Purpose: Provides administration/service to prospective and current customer base by supporting the Insurance Operations team. This includes the processing and distribution of new and renewal business, cancellation notices, and policy change requests. Routine contact with both internal and external agents, as well as prospective and current clients is required. Accountable for underwriting, expansion and profitability for respective lines of business to include reviewing, analyzing, accepting and declining risk within levels of underwriting authority and to achieve planned goals.



Essential Functions:

Underwrite and select business in accordance with underwriting guidelines and within written levels of underwriting authority to ensure an underwriting profit. Follow up with brokers/policyholders/internal customers on any outstanding questions and/or paperwork necessary to complete the underwriting review. Assure that all files are documented and contain an analysis of exposures, pricing methodology and contractual documentation of the risks covered.


Processing policy change requests including review and approval of changes that are within letter of underwriting authority and referral of higher risk changes for underwriting review. Issues policy changes in policy system and generates policy change documents and delivers policy change documents to insured and / or agent.


Processing policy renewals including review of license status, claims activity, and any other noted reasons for review at renewal. Enters all data accurately into the underwriting system to generate renewal policy documents and delivery of renewal documents to insured and / or agent.


Be a point of contact for incoming phone calls from
brokers/insureds/internal customers. Responsible for follow up phone calls and emails related to new business and policy change requests.


Provide professional mentoring and technical underwriting support to Associate Underwriting staff.


Performs other job-related duties as assigned.


Requirements:
Education: College Degree Preferred. High school degree or equivalent experience. Personal and commercial lines agent license required or must obtain license within two months of employment and requires the ability to meet insurer appointment criteria to represent the company as applicable.



Experience: 3-4 years of related underwriting or insurance experience.



Skills: Ability to develop underwriting concepts, practices and procedures; excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills; excellent attention to detail, good problem-solving skills; requires understanding of standard concepts, practices and procedures within a particular field; ability to obtain extensive knowledge of professional liability and management liability.



Mental Demands: Must have the ability to focus on task for extended periods of time. Must be flexible and have the ability to work with a variety of tasks and employees. Ability to plan, organize, be detail and deadline oriented and maintain a high accuracy rate.



Physical Demands: Continuous sitting for extended periods of time, some standing, walking, bending and reaching. Frequent use of fingers and hands to manipulate computer, telephone and other office equipment.
