Microbiologist

About the Role

The Microbiologist is responsible for independently performing microbiological testing and monitoring activities in accordance with defined standards and requirements. This role applies technical knowledge of microbiological methods and techniques to support the collection and testing of a variety of materials and samples. The Microbiologist maintains laboratory operational readiness, ensures data accuracy and completeness, contributes to investigations and continuous improvement initiatives, and supports routine trending activities. 

Responsibilities

• Collect and manage samples and perform microbiological testing in accordance with defined standards and requirements. 


• Conduct various techniques and assays, utilizing appropriate aseptic techniques, and including but not limited to bioburden, endotoxin, plating and enumeration methods, gram staining, isolation, and other identification or specified microorganism tests.


• Analyze and document microbiological data. Identify atypical results, excursions, or trends and ensure timely escalation and documentation.


• Prepare and manage media and reagents required to support microbiological testing and monitoring activities, including the performance of growth promotion testing, maintenance of inventories, and management of associated documentation.


• Manage equipment, labware, and supplies to support microbiology testing, including routine cleaning, preparation, and performance checks. 


• Maintain general laboratory readiness, including the performance of routine housekeeping activities and decontamination and management of waste. 


• Assist with the development and revision of laboratory standards, test methods, protocols, reports, and other technical documents. 


• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to conduct and support laboratory investigations and contribute to performance of root cause analyses and corrective actions.


• Perform and support routine technical analyses and reviews, including but not limited to trend analyses and other data reviews.  


• Perform other duties as assigned or requested.

Qualifications/Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in microbiology, biology, or a closely related field.


• Minimum two (2) years of experience in a microbiology laboratory with responsibility for routine testing and documentation activities.


• Proven ability to follow and prepare written documents. 


• Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills. 


• Ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities. 


• Strong working knowledge and experience with microbiological techniques and methods.


• Thorough understanding of documentation and requirements for a laboratory environment.
