General Summary


Provides a safe, secure and therapeutic environment for, and responds to the needs of patients, employees, visitors and other customers of the Adult Inpatient Psychiatric Unit.



Responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:



  • Responds to emergency situations such as accidents, injuries, violent behavior or outbursts and safety hazards. Provides assistance, summons proper authorities and polices area to maintain order, safety and to protect patients, employees and visitors.

  • Participants in restraint of psychiatric patients under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) or physician. Responds to inquiries for advice or assistance from employees, students, visitors and other customers.

  • Manages behavioral crises including 1:1 observation, redirection, physical restraint and team crisis interventions.

  • Monitors conduct of patients and visitors on the unit; Reports problems to the RN in charge.

  • Participates in room and safety checks on every shift under the supervision of an RN.

  • Assists with milieu management.

  • Awareness of behavioral management plans for acute patients in cooperation with treatment team recommendations.

  • Provides one-on-one intervention with patients who have a high risk for violence.

  • Reports safety and/or fire hazards or security violations.

  • Coordinates with outside law enforcement agencies and the legal system as necessary.

  • May assist in securing patient valuables or lost and found articles. Assists in maintaining logs of items received.

  • Employs all necessary equipment to include Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) during situations that are deemed unsafe and during interactions with precaution patients.

  • Maintains proficiency in de-escalation principals; Establishes and maintains positive therapeutic relationships with patients.

  • Demonstrates commitment to patients, visitors and other staff by complying with all applicable safety regulations, identifying opportunities to standardize processes and "error proof" systems that will lead to increased safety, and participating in safety education programs and root cause analyses as required.

  • Maintains established policies and procedures, objectives, quality assessment and safety standards. Attends scheduled meetings as required.

  • Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings, and workshops; Demonstrates knowledge of the patient population.

  • Assists with care and maintenance of department equipment and supplies.


 



Qualifications

Qualifications

Minimum Education:



  • High School Diploma or GED Required


Work Experience:



  • Less than 1 year Relevant experience. Required

  • Behavioral, criminal justice, mental health, or social sciences experience. Preferred


Licenses:



  • Basic Life Support Upon Hire Required


Courses and Training:



  • Milieu management/de-escalation training. within 60 days Required


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:



  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills.

  • Excellent human relations and oral/written communication skills.
