Millwork Shop Drawing Reviewer

Job Description - Millwork Shop Drawing Reviewer

This is not a drafting job. SMI is developing software that generates millwork shop drawings, and this role exists to make that software good enough to trust. You would review what it produces, correct it, and do that at volume so the system learns from the corrections.

That is why we are looking for a lead draftsperson out of a high-end custom millwork shop. The value is not drafting speed. It is knowing how a shop actually builds, and being able to look at a drawing and see immediately what is wrong with it.

What you would be doing

  • Review software-generated millwork shop drawings for accuracy, constructability and completeness.

  • Correct what is wrong - dimensions, joinery, materials, hardware, edge conditions, assembly sequence, shop standards.

  • Judge the output the way a shop would. Will this drawing build, and will it build the way a high-end shop expects.

  • Work through high volume. The software improves in proportion to how much corrected work it is given.

  • Flag the patterns. Where the software gets the same thing wrong repeatedly, say so, so it can be fixed at the source.

What we are looking for

  • A minimum of five years as a lead draftsperson in a high-end custom millwork shop.

  • Working knowledge of how a shop runs, not only how a drawing looks. This role is being filled for that knowledge.

  • Command of millwork detailing - casework, paneling, joinery, hardware, finishes and the shop standards behind them.

  • The judgment to look at a drawing and know what is wrong with it without being told.

  • Comfort saying clearly and repeatedly what is not right. The job is correction.

  • Willingness to work on something unfinished. The software is early, and improving it is the work.

The arrangement

  • Full-time, forty hours a week, on site in a Manhattan office. This is not a remote or hybrid position.

  • Employment or contract terms can be discussed. What is not flexible is that the work is done in the office.

  • The role is intended to be long-term if the project succeeds.

Benefits

  • Medical insurance, with the employee base plan covered in full.

  • A 401(k) with a 5% employer match, eligible from your first day.

  • Paid time off covering vacation, sick and personal days, and ten federal holidays.
