Purpose:
The Department of Theatre Dance at Santa Clara University, a Jesuit, Catholic University located in the heart of northern California’s Silicon Valley on the land of the Ohlone and Muwekma Ohlone, seeks a Musical Director/Vocal Coach to teach THTR 29/129 – Rehearsal and Performance. This will involve music and vocal direction of the Theatre and Dance department spring production of “42nd Street,” music by Harry Warren, lyrics by Al Dubin, book by Michael Stewart & Mark Bramble; based on the novel by Bradford Ropes and the motion picture "42nd Street" owned by Turner Entertainment Co. and distributed by Warner Bros. Run of the show is 7 performances between May 24-June 1, 2024. The successful candidate will recruit, rehearse and conduct orchestra during the run of the show, and work with stage director on vocal coaching of production numbers. Position also require​s​ regular meetings with​ the​ director, choreographer and design ​faculty​ as necessary to fully realize the director’s vision of the production.

Basic Qualifications:
- MA/MFA in Theatre or Music (or equivalent professional experience) and previous teaching at the university level.
- Ability to carry out the professional duties of position; working with department director, choreographer, designers, technical director and a student work crew.
- Collaborative work style, strong organizational and communication skills.
- Commitment to teaching theatre through production, within a liberal arts context.

Preferred Qualifications:
Extensive musical direction and vocal coach experience in both professional venues and university settings. Experience teaching and mentoring a diverse population of undergraduate students.

Responsibilities:
Duties for Thtr 29/129 – Rehearsal and Performance include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Conduct auditions and callbacks for the student cast according to the schedule set by the director in the last week of the winter quarter, March 11-15, 2024.
  • Conduct seven weeks of evening rehearsals starting on April 2, 2024 (approximately 2-4 hours/day and 4-5 reh/week – specific hours to be arranged), and culminating with the opening night on May 24, 2024.
  • Identify and secure show orchestra for sitzprobe/music, technical and dress rehearsals as well as the run of the show by no later than April 30, 2024 so that appropriate contracts can be secured in advance of musician rehearsals.
  • Attend all design and production meetings as required.
  • Attend all day technical rehearsals on Saturday and Sunday May 18 and 19, 2024
  • Fulfill other instructional or academic duties such as attending faculty meetings or department special events, as may be assigned by the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences or the Chair of the Department.

THTR 29/129 Rehearsal & Performance: Active participation in the preparation and performance of departmental productions as actors, assistants to the director, dancers, and choreographers. Individual design/technical assignments. May be repeated for a total of 8 units. Prerequisite: Approval of director of production. (2 units)
