Personal Lines Manager/Vice President

Job Summary

Seeking a highly experienced and motivated Personal Lines Manager or Vice President to lead a Personal Lines department. This is a full-time, in-office leadership role that combines strategic oversight with hands-on management. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in underwriting, regulatory compliance, and team leadership within the insurance industry. This position is critical to ensuring the department operates in compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and industry standards while delivering exceptional service to clients.

Compensation Package

• Salary Range: $120,000 - $160,000+ (commensurate with experience; higher compensation considered for exceptional candidates)

Responsibilities

• Provide strategic direction and oversight for the Personal Lines department, ensuring underwriting integrity and regulatory compliance.


• Hire, mentor, and develop staff, including overseeing onboarding and career development opportunities.


• Conduct annual performance reviews and establish collaborative goals for team success.


• Prepare and manage the department's annual budget, including premium, income, expenses, and salaries.


• Monitor and maintain P&L authority for the department, analyzing underwriting metrics to identify areas for improvement.


• Lead the development of product enhancements based on industry trends and book performance.


• Manage relationships with carriers and agencies, ensuring acceptable loss ratios and timely reporting.


• Oversee underwriting policies, guidelines, and appetite, identifying emerging industry trends and developing market-leading solutions.


• Conduct monthly audits, prepare for carrier audits, and respond to findings as required.


• Drive profitable top-line premiums and recommend new market opportunities.


• Ensure team productivity, policy retention, and process efficiency through effective workflow management.

Qualifications/Requirements

• Experience:
  
  
  
  • 10+ years of insurance experience, including 5+ years in underwriting within a carrier environment.
  
  
  • 5+ years of staff management experience.
  
  
  • Proven track record of creating and placing new business and establishing relationships within the independent retail agency system.
  
  
  
  


• Education:
  
  
  
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Insurance and Risk Management or a related field preferred.
  
  
  • Relevant licenses are a plus.
  
  
  
  


• Skills and Knowledge:
  
  
  
  • Strong understanding of underwriting concepts, policy design, and book management.
  
  
  • Financial acumen with knowledge of rate-making, pricing concepts, and profitability drivers.
  
  
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and the ability to adapt to new software applications and carrier systems.
  
  
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with strong leadership and interpersonal abilities.
  
  
  • Ability to multitask efficiently in a fast-paced environment with strong organizational and prioritization skills.
