Description of Work

Join our team of compassionate and caring nursing professionals! We assist individuals in creating opportunities to recover from mental illness and substance use disorders by instilling hope, facilitating choice, promoting healing, and supporting their personal journeys of wellness.

Broughton Hospital is currently accepting applications for Nurse Supervisor I position assigned to House Supervision on first (7:00am-3:30pm) shift or 12-hour (7:00am-7:30pm) days. This dynamic position is responsible for the supervision of the delivery of nursing care. The duties of the House Supervisor includes maintaining adequate nursing coverage for the provision of nursing care in a safe and therapeutic environment, continuously monitoring the delivery of nursing services through direct observation while rounding on each of the units and providing problem-oriented solutions identified through the continuous assessment and identification of the patient and nursing staff needs. This supervisor will also serve as a professional resource regarding the standards of care, hospital policy, and procedures.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
· Serving as a professional resource to staff and continuously monitors compliance with agency policies and standards. Leads employees by demonstrating a professional, caring approach, by listening, being accessible, and leading by example toward common short-term operational goals and objectives of the unit.
· Advising and counseling employees on job performance and conduct.
· Collaborate with service area supervision to implement plans for employees to gain necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform their duties.
· Listening, asking questions, and providing feedback to employees, giving clear and concise instructions.
· Developing and maintaining effective communication and work relationships with physicians, upper management, healthcare personnel, patients, families, agencies, and others.
· Assessing employee competencies and conducting/participating in management reviews.
· Coaching, mentoring, and supporting professional development of nursing staff.
· Delegating and assigning tasks.
· Promotes communication and identifies and addresses quality monitoring and performance improvement issues for the unit.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Recruitment Range: $69,027.00 - $113,896.00

*A Sign-on bonus of $10,000 may be offered to the successful applicant(s) of this posting, contingent on the 2025-2026 Budget Approval.

Candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they meet the minimum education and experience listed on the vacancy announcement.

The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)/ Management Preferences are not required. Applicants who possess the following skills are preferred:

  • Two (2) years of experience working as a Registered Nurse

Management preferences candidates with the following:

  • Experience coaching, mentoring, and evaluating licensed/unlicensed Nursing staff

  • Experience implementing and evaluating evidence-based practices

  • Experience assessing patients across the lifespan

  • Experience working with patients with substance abuse, mental illness, and Intellectual Developmental Disorders

Conditional Requirements: Selected applicants must be able to pass a State Bureau of Investigation Criminal History Check, and complete and pass BLS/CPR training and Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) training during orientation.

This Position Is Exempt And Is EXEMPT From Certain Provisions Of The State Human Resources Act (GS 126)

This Position Is Designated As Mandatory And Must Report Or Stay Over During Adverse Weather Events.

Work Schedule: The primary working hours for this position are listed below and include alternating weekends and holidays. Flexibility is required to meet the needs of the facility. This position is classified as mandatory and must report to work during adverse weather events.

  • 8-hour shifts, 7:00am-3:30pm. Monday -Friday with alternating weekends and holidays or

  • 12-hour shifts, 7:00am-7:30pm. Monday -Friday with alternating weekends and holidays

Please note: Selected applicants will be required to work Monday-Friday, 40 hours/week for the duration of new employee orientation and training.

*Eligibility for Sign-on Bonus

To qualify for the Sign-on Bonus, a newly hired permanent full-time or permanent part-time employee must work 30 to 40 hours per week to be eligible. Those who are eligible and working less than 40 hours a week will receive a prorated rate.


An employee is not eligible for a sign-on bonus if:

  • The employee has held a position in the North Carolina State government, including the judicial system, or the University of North Carolina system, within the last 12 months (the employee shall remain ineligible for 12 months from the separation date)
  • The employee has previously received a sign-on bonus from any State agency
  • DHHS has paid any contract placement or recruitment fees.

About the Facility: 

Broughton Hospital is one of the three regional psychiatric hospitals with statutory responsibility for operating as part of the Division of State Operated Healthcare Facilities (DSOHF).  With the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, we provide help and support to North Carolinians, and their families, experiencing mental illness. Our hospital serves the western thirty-seven (37) counties of North Carolina, as part of the state's system of care and treatment for persons with mental illness.
