JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE:              TOUR GUIDE
GRADE:                    GRADE 14
UNION:                     NON-UNION
LOCATIONS:          

  • Daley Center, CL-16
  • Leighton Criminal Court
HOURS:                     8:30 AM-4:30 PM
SALARY:                  $ 62049


The Tour Guide serves in a community outreach capacity to promote court educational programs. Court educational programs for the public focus on civic education, improving access, and building trust through activities like courthouse visits, mock trials using real cases, career exploration for students, teacher training, and judicial processes, all designed to enhance public understanding of the courts and promote informed citizenship. These initiatives may involve coordination with judges to explain legal issues to the public.


Job summary and duties department Tour Guide/Staff:
 
  • Participates in broad-based community outreach programs/services to educate and inform the community about the Court system’s mission and function. Programs regularly reach thousands of adults and students each year.
  • Helps coordinate (phone calls, email correspondence, planning, scheduling, etc.) and conduct daily courthouse tours at the Daley Center, the Criminal Courthouse.
  • Assists in the planning and implementation of the Heritage Tours, combining public Educational activities, including national and local observances that mark racial and ethnic diversity. Heritage Tours are held during Black History Month, Women’s History Month, Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, Greek Heritage Day, Puerto Rican Heritage Day, Latino/Hispanic Heritage Month, Italian Heritage Month, Polish Heritage Month, Veterans Day, and Arab-American Heritage Month.
  • Must be able to handle unexpected situations, such as unscheduled tours, last-minute tour requests, and having a tour with no available trials (“empty courtroom” program).
  • Communicates with judges and support staff daily.
  • Provides clerical and team support for the annual CCLRE Mock Trial Competition for Chicago Public High Schools.

Job Requirements:
 
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Strong working knowledge of the law and the justice system
  • Ability to speak to and manage large groups of adults and children
  • Ability to tailor delivery of tour information to the age and background of a group
  • Computer skills are essential, including typing, creating and maintaining data files, creating and maintaining label files, mail merge programming for mass mailings, and proofreading skills
  • Ability to work well with others
  • Second language a plus


Working conditions/physical requirements:
 
  • Ability to move around the courthouse and elsewhere as required
  • Ability to be on one's feet and walk for extended periods of time while providing tours
  • Ability to intermittently twist to reach equipment and supplies
  • Ability to perform simple grasping and fine manipulation
  • Strength to lift objects weighing up to 25 pounds
  • Ability to use a telephone and computer
